Reality is often scarier than a movie.
I mean we have all seen scary giant clowns in movies and some of us might get scared by that but the true horror is always our reality. And creators of horror movies know this so you will see time and time again movies mentioning that they are based upon a ‘real-life story’. What that actually means is that something similar happened and now we are going to throw a ton of jump scares into it to make it more ‘thrilling’ than the actual event was.
However, that doesn’t mean we don’t lap it up. I mean who wants to see a person thinking they are seeing something while everyone calls them crazy and we as audiences don’t see anything either. That would be pretty boring so I somewhat understand why filmmakers do this. However, it should always be that it is inspired by real-life events.
Although that doesn’t apply to all horror movies as you’ll come to see below. So scroll down to take a look.
#1 The Nun.

The inspiration behind it is the sad and well known case known as the Tanacu Exorcism and I’ll spare you the details but a priest thought a woman was possessed when she was just schizophrenic and ended her life.
#2 Scream 2.

The person behind the mask so to say was The Gainesville Ripper and he ended the life of many students.
#3 Silence of the Lambs.

We all know who Ted Bundy is and some of the scenes in these films were inspired by him.
#4 Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Psycho.

Ed Gein is the one who was the inspiration behind these movies and you can see that with the relationships these villains have with their parents.
#5 Split.

Billy Milligan is the one from whom this movies was inspired and he is the one who had 24 personalities living in his head. And some of them were not as nice as the others.
#6 Adrift.

Tamy Ashcraft is the woman who survived 41 days on a boat in the middle of the sea while her fiance passed away from his injuries.
#7 Awakenings.

This movie is an autobiography of Oliver Sacks, a doctor who treated people with encephalitis lethargica.
#8 Bernie.

The story of Bernie Tiede is shown clearly in this movie. And what starts as a normal relationship with a widow soon takes on a whole new turn.
#9 Zodiac.

This one is still an anomly because the police never managed to catch him. We don’t even know if he is still alive and that is what makes him so terrifying.
#10 Regression.

1980 was the time when people were obsessed with stanic cults and that is what this movie takes inspiration from.
#11 The conjuring.

I think we all know about Ed and Lorraine Warren, the supposed paranormal investigators.
#12 Heavenly Creatures.

When two woman fall in love in 1954, the neighborhood is not happy neither their parents. So they take revenge on their parents. That is the story of Pauline Parker and Juliet Hulme.
