The AusAlert test will send an emergency warning siren to virtually every phone in Australia on Monday, 27 July 2026, as part of the first nationwide trial of a new national warning system. This test, conducted by the National Emergency Management Agency (Nema), aims to prepare Australians for fires, floods, terrorist incidents, or health emergencies.
What Is AusAlert?
AusAlert is Australia’s new national warning system that delivers mass emergency messages directly to mobile devices via phone towers. Unlike standard SMS alerts, AusAlert broadcasts a pop-up notification and a loud siren that cannot be silenced—even if your phone is on “do not disturb” or silent mode. The system is set to launch nationally in October 2026, with Monday’s test serving as a critical dry run.

What Will Happen During the National Test?
At 2:00 PM AEST on Monday, 27 July, most phones, smartwatches, and tablets across Australia will receive a siren lasting about 10 seconds. The notification will display “TEST MESSAGE” and “NO ACTION IS REQUIRED.” Pat Hetherington, interim coordinator general at Nema, described the siren as “loud enough to get people’s attention” but quieter than a fire alarm.
| Feature | AusAlert Test | Current SMS Alerts |

| Siren override | Cannot be silenced | Silenceable |
