Convicted Killer Denies Murdering Friends in Cornwall Cabin Trial 2026

A convicted killer denies murdering two friends whose remains were found near his Cornwall cabin, claiming he discovered their bodies while high on drugs. James Desborough, 40, told a jury at Winchester Crown Court that he found one friend hanging from a tree and the other naked in a stream on his land near St Austell. He admitted concealing the remains but insisted he did not kill Claudio Aquilino, 57, or Daniel Coleman, 43.

The Shocking Discovery and Drug-Induced Confusion

Desborough testified that he was under the influence of ketamine, speed, cannabis, and tequila when he came upon the bodies. “I had lost all concept of reality,” he said. “I can’t remember what I was thinking. I made some bad decisions.” He described the situation as “a series of unfortunate circumstances” when asked how two bodies ended up in his woods.

Background of the Victims and Accused

All three men had lived together at a hostel in Newquay. Desborough described himself as an unemployed civil engineer who was homeless and struggling with addiction. He said Aquilino was paranoid and believed others wanted to kill him. After leaving Newquay in early summer 2025, Desborough and Aquilino moved to the woodland cabin.

Key Evidence and Admission

Desborough admits to concealing the bodies in dense undergrowth but denies murder. He also accepted in court that he killed a cellmate while in prison in Devon awaiting trial for the two alleged murders. When asked why, he rejected the suggestion it was because the cellmate snored, but did not provide an alternative reason.

Legal Implications and Defense Strategy

The defense hinges on Desborough’s claim that he found the bodies post-mortem and acted irrationally due to substance abuse. Prosecutors argue the evidence of dismemberment and burning contradicts his story. A jury must decide whether the convicted killer is telling the truth or if this is a calculated attempt to avoid a life sentence.
