In a surprising political move, Keir Starmer has made Sadiq Khan a peer in the House of Lords just days before the prime minister stands down, potentially reshaping Labour's leadership landscape. The London mayor's elevation to the upper chamber has sparked widespread debate about its timing and implications for the party's future.
Why Starmer Elevated Khan to the House of Lords
The decision to grant Khan a peerage comes amid Starmer's final days in office, with insiders suggesting it was designed to shore up Labour's progressive flank after the May local elections. Khan, who has served as London mayor since 2016, has long been tipped for a Lords seat, and this move positions him for a potential role in Andy Burnham's future cabinet.

Timing and Political Strategy
While Downing Street sources claim the peerage is part of a regular honours list, the timing is notably unusual. Peerages are typically tied to political events and announced in spring or autumn. Starmer had previously criticized Boris Johnson for handing out resignation honours, yet he now appears to follow a similar path. Khan is one of 26 new peers announced, adding to the 66 Starmer has appointed since taking power two years ago.
Khan's Future Plans and Cabinet Prospects
Despite speculation, sources close to Khan confirm he has told the prime minister-in-waiting he has no wish to serve as a minister in his government. Khan remains focused on completing his mayoral term and has not yet decided whether to seek a fourth term in 2028. However, his Lords seat leaves the door open for future collaboration with Burnham, especially on devolution challenges.
