Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has resigned after the centre-left bloc secured a slim majority in the country's general election, paving the way for Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson to attempt to form a new government. The preliminary count completed on Thursday showed the left-leaning opposition parties winning 176 seats, a narrow three-seat majority over the right-leaning ruling Tidö coalition.

Centre-Left Bloc Secures Narrow Victory

The election result was decided by a margin of just 50,359 votes between the two blocs. The left-leaning parties – Social Democrats, Left, Centre, and Green – collectively secured 176 seats, while the incumbent right-wing coalition, supported by the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD), won 173 seats. This thin majority gives the centre-left a mandate to govern but leaves little room for defections.

In her victory speech on Thursday, Magdalena Andersson, who previously served as prime minister before Kristersson, said the Swedish people had "voted for a new direction for our country, voted for unity and against division." She added, "The Swedish people have voted to take Sweden forward and I will realise the new direction that you have voted for."

Andersson's Priorities and Coalition Talks

Andersson has outlined key priorities for her potential government, including the climate crisis, schools, healthcare, elderly care, and immigration policy. She has already extended invitations to the Left, Centre, and Green parties for initial coalition talks, signalling a collaborative approach to governance.

The outgoing prime minister, Ulf Kristersson, leader of the Moderate Party, announced his resignation after four years in office. His departure follows a campaign in which he had promised key ministerial posts to the Sweden Democrats if his coalition retained power. However, the SD ultimately lost support, and the right-wing bloc fell short.

Implications for Sweden's Political Landscape

The election marks a significant shift in Swedish politics. The far-right Sweden Democrats had hoped to gain unprecedented influence, but the result instead reflects a preference for stability and unity under centre-left leadership. Andersson's victory speech emphasised bridging divisions, a clear contrast to the divisive rhetoric that characterised the campaign.

With a slim majority, the new government will need to navigate a fragmented parliament. Key challenges include addressing climate change, reforming healthcare and education, and managing immigration – issues that resonate across the political spectrum. The narrow margin also means that any coalition partner could hold significant sway, potentially complicating legislative agendas.
