The devastating Canadian wildfires have burned two First Nations communities to the ground, leaving residents without any government warning or emergency alert. The Namaygoosisagagun First Nation in northwestern Ontario was engulfed by flames on June 15, forcing members to self-evacuate by boat. No mandatory evacuation order was issued, and leaders say they were told there was no imminent threat.
The Devastation of Namaygoosisagagun First Nation
Located north of Thunder Bay, the remote community of Namaygoosisagagun was completely destroyed by a fast-moving wildfire. About two dozen people packed their belongings into boats and raced across the lake to safety. “If this community waited for a mandatory evacuation process, we’d be doing a recovery mission for the bodies of children, of elders, of men and women,” said Linda Debassige, grand council chief of the Anishinabek Nation. All members escaped, but every building and piece of infrastructure was lost.

Chief Helen Paavola had contacted the federal government days before the fire, but was assured there was no immediate danger. The lack of emergency alerts has sparked outrage among First Nations leaders, who accuse provincial and federal authorities of failing to protect vulnerable communities.
Government Response and Criticism
Ontario Premier Doug Ford traveled to Thunder Bay and stated the province was willing to spend whatever necessary to fight the fires. However, First Nations leaders criticized the response as disorganized and unclear. The Anishinabek Nation accused the premier of not providing specific support details or coordinating effectively with First Nations governments.
Thirteen communities in Ontario have been ordered to evacuate, most of them First Nations. Nearly 1,000 wildfires are burning across Canada, with about 200 in Ontario. Prime Minister Mark Carney described the season as “one of the most intense wildfire seasons in Canadian history,” attributing it to heatwaves and dry weather.

FAQ
Why were no emergency alerts sent to the Namaygoosisagagun community?
The community had contacted the federal government days earlier and was told there was no imminent threat. When the fire rapidly advanced, no alert was issued, leaving residents to evacuate on their own. Leaders say this reflects a larger pattern of neglect toward First Nations.
How many people have been evacuated due to the Canadian wildfires?
As of Monday, close to 2,000 people have been evacuated to cities like Toronto and Niagara Falls. Thirteen communities in Ontario have been ordered to evacuate, most of which are First Nations. The total number of evacuees across Canada is much higher as other provinces also battle fires.
What is being done to improve wildfire response for First Nations communities?
First Nations leaders are calling for a dedicated emergency management system that includes real-time alerts, earlier evacuation triggers, and direct funding for local firefighting resources. The Anishinabek Nation is providing assistance to evacuees in Thunder Bay, but leaders say systemic change is needed to prevent future tragedies.
The situation remains critical as nearly 1,000 wildfires burn across Canada. The destruction of Namaygoosisagagun serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by remote communities and the urgent need for reliable Canadian wildfire alert systems. First Nations leaders continue to push for accountability and better protection as the fire season intensifies.
