Billy Kenny: The Goodison Gazza's Fall from Football Grace 2026

Billy Kenny, once hailed as the 'Goodison Gazza', was one of English football's brightest young talents. His story is a stark warning about talent wasted and the devastating impact of addiction.

The Rise of a Football Prodigy

In the early 1990s, Billy Kenny was a name on every top manager's lips. Pursued by Alex Ferguson, Kenny Dalglish, and Howard Kendall, he chose his beloved Everton. His talent shone brightest in a man-of-the-match performance against Liverpool at Goodison Park in December 1992. Teammate Peter Beardsley dubbed him 'the Goodison Gazza', a comparison that would prove eerily prophetic.

Kenny played once for England's under-21s in March 1993, but his fall was as rapid as his rise. He discovered cocaine after his greatest game, just after turning 19. His habit spiralled out of control, and he retired from professional football two years later, having played only 23 games for Everton, four for Oldham, and two for Barrow.

The Dark Descent into Addiction

Kenny's story mirrors that of Paul Gascoigne, whose addictions and troubles plagued his career. For Kenny, cocaine became his escape, but it also became his prison. He struggled as an addict for years, ending up in prison. 'The only time I've had peace was when I was locked up,' he admits, tears of hurt and regret streaming down his face.

Now 53, Kenny is still bitter and frustrated. 'I'm angry with Everton for not looking after me,' he says. 'Listen, I'm no angel. I've played my part, but there are other people who played their part in the demise of Billy Kenny. It was an absolute waste of talent.'
