Malta Film Industry: How a Tiny Island Became a Movie Magnet 2026

Malta film industry has exploded in recent years, turning the Mediterranean archipelago into a magnet for big-budget movie productions. From Gladiator II to Jurassic World Rebirth, this tiny nation now rivals Hollywood backlots.

Why Malta Became a Film Production Powerhouse

Malta's strategic location, sunny climate, and diverse landscapes make it a versatile stand-in for everything from ancient Rome to the Caribbean. But the real driver is a generous tax rebate program that offers up to 40% cash rebate on qualifying expenditures.

According to the Malta Film Commission, the island hosted 36 productions in 2025 alone, a record number. This growth is part of an "arms race" among European countries to attract international filmmakers.

Key Factors Behind Malta's Success

• Tax incentives of up to 40% on local spend
• World-class studio facilities, including the famous Mediterranean Film Studios water tanks
• Historic architecture and varied landscapes in a compact area
• Experienced local crew and support services
• Government-backed film commission with streamlined permitting

Iconic Movies and TV Shows Filmed in Malta

Malta has doubled for ancient Rome in Gladiator II, the Caribbean in Guy Ritchie's Viva la Madness, and even the Bay of Pentos in Game of Thrones. The island also appears as itself in the upcoming Netflix series Enola Holmes season 3.

Malta's Film History and Future

Malta's cinematic history dates back to 1925's Sons of the Sea. Since then, it has hosted legendary productions like Midnight Express and Troy. The island's two massive water tanks, among the largest in the world, are a major draw for maritime films.

Looking ahead, Malta is set to feature in Stephen Poliakoff's The Order, about the 1565 siege. With such a pipeline, the island's film industry shows no signs of slowing down.

Economic Impact and Job Creation

Film production contributes significantly to Malta's economy, creating jobs and boosting tourism. The government's proactive approach has made the sector a pillar of economic diversification.
