The Day She Returns review finds Hong Sang-soo once again delivering a slow, reflective boozing session that really hits the spot. Fans of the prolific Korean master will recognize his signature black-and-white aesthetic, static camera long takes, and philosophical conversations over beer.
Hong Sang-soo's Signature Style in The Day She Returns
This film features three back-to-back interviews with Jeong-su, a famous actress in her 40s played by Song Seon-mi. She has taken a career break for motherhood and divorce, now returning in a low-key indie film. The interviewers are almost interchangeable, a subtle structural joke by Hong. They ask not about the film but how she is feeling, and she offers them beer.
