Castlevania: Belmont's Curse brings the legendary Konami series back to consoles in October 2025, set in demon-infested 1499 Paris. Players control Rose Belmont, daughter of Trevor Belmont, as she wields a versatile whip through the city's sewers and streets. This side-scrolling revival aims to reclaim the metroidvania throne after a decade-long hiatus since Lords of Shadow 2.
What Is Castlevania: Belmont's Curse?
Set 23 years after Castlevania 3, the game aligns with the hit Netflix series timeline. Rose Belmont answers a bishop's plea to rid Paris of ancient evil, starting her journey in the Paris sewers. Konami partnered with Evil Empire, the studio behind Dead Cells, to develop this title, marking a return to 2D side-scrolling gameplay.

Gameplay Innovations and Whip Mechanics
Rose's whip is not just for combat—it can hoist her to ceilings, propel her toward enemies, and ricochet off foes for deadly strikes. This retooling adds kinetic energy to movement, allowing sliding, attacking, and hurtling across environments. The game features a metroidvania structure with interconnected areas, secret rooms, and upgradeable abilities.
Boss Fights: Joan of Arc and More
One standout boss is Joan of Arc, reimagined as a demonic adversary. Other bosses include classic Castlevania foes like Death and Dracula's minions. Each encounter requires pattern recognition and whip mastery. Below is a comparison of key boss features:
| Boss | Location | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Joan of Arc | Notre Dame Rooftop | Holy Water |
| Death | Sewer Catacombs | Whip Upgrades |
| Dracula's Minion | Royal Palace | Fire Sub-Weapon |

Why This Revival Matters
Castlevania inspired an entire genre, but the series itself lay dormant for over a decade. Belmont's Curse aims to reclaim its legacy by returning to roots while modernizing controls. Producer Tsutomu Taniguchi noted the pressure of reviving a beloved series, but the cold email from Evil Empire sparked the perfect timing for a comeback.
