If you are looking for an idea to organize your plants in an incredible way, then this hanging basket column will be perfect for you.
The planters are holding up well, but the finish looked dull after a couple of years in the sun.
I decided to paint them with a darker walnut finish (compared to the original red oak).
At the same time, I thought it would be a good time to update the planters.
To provide flowers for the cover, my wife had been talking about a hanging basket column that could be placed on the ground or in pots.
Steps to make a column for hanging baskets in a flower pot

Step 1: Materials and Tools
So, I created this very simple project from 4x4 lumber, end caps, base plates, and hangers.
I made it a little more complicated by trimming the 4x4s to match the dimensions of the decorative cap, but that's not really necessary.
Tools:
- Table saw
- Drill
- Sander
- Tape measure
- Pencil,
Materials:
- 1 Wood 4×4 x 6’
- A piece of wood 14″x14″ x 3/4″
- Also 1 Cover
- 2 Hangers/Screws
- 4 Wood Screws
Step 2: Pallet Planter ProjectPallet

Step 3: Construction of the column

You will be building this drawing.
Step 4: Poles

The height of the position is arbitrary.
I wanted something high enough so the bottom of the baskets wouldn't hit the railing of our deck.
Since the rear assembly sits inside the raised deck planter, 66” was calculated as a suitable length.
Use a table or miter saw to cut 4x4s long.
The 4x4s I bought were in pretty rough shape.
To clean them, I used a table saw with the blade set to the highest setting (3.75”) and cut a ¼” off each side of the post.
The final dimensions of the posts are now 3″ x 3″.
Step 5: Sand the edges
Sand the corners to break up any sharp edges.
Step 6: Cover

To add a decorative touch, I purchased end caps for the tops of the posts.
They came with a screw embedded in the base of the lid.
Note that the end cap is 3″ x 3″, which matches the dimensions.
Drill a hole in the center of one end to accept the end cap screw. Screw the cap onto the post.
Step 7: Base

The pole base provides stability for the pole inside the planter.
The drawing shows a 14″ by 3/4″ thick square base.
I didn't have that available, so I used 2x12s wood.
The base shown is 11.5″ x 12″ x 1.5″ thick. Mount the base to the underside of the post with 4 screws.
Step 8: Paint the post
These were stained with Minwax Walnut and covered with two coats of outdoor polyurethane.
Step 9: Hangers

The peoplechas come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Think about the size of the baskets you will hang before selecting the hanger.
The baskets shown here are 16″ in diameter.
The attachment point on the hanger is 9” from the edge, giving you enough room to move back and forth without damaging the pole.
Determine the number of hangers and the height.
We wanted something low profile that could be placed along the railing of our deck, so only two hooks are used.
I've included a picture of a four-hook style if you think it would work better.
For height, I needed something that wouldn't hit the top of the deck railing.
Mount hooks in desired location with provided screws (60″ shown).
Step 10: Ready to Assemble

Since both the base and column can be awkward to move, I would assemble them wherever you want to use them.
We set everything up on the deck.
Step 11: Protect the inside of the planter

Since the pot boxes have gaps between the boards, a plastic bag was used inside the box.
It was attached with staples and some holes were put in the bottom for drainage.
Step 12: Add Pole Assemblies to Planter Boxes

For added stability, you can add screws from the base of the post to the base of the planter box.
I didn't feel this was necessary when considering the weight of the dirt pressing down on the base of the pole. Fill the box with soil.
Step 13: Add baskets and plants

The base of the planter holds four liriope, a grassy lily, which will eventually reach 12″ in height and fill the planter with evergreen foliage.
The 16″ diameter baskets are planted with a variety of colorful petunias for our enjoyment while we rest on the terrace.
Step 14: More photos

By summer, petunias will enlarge and cover the sides of hanging baskets.
Step 15: Land Option
Although I have shown the hanging basket pole mounted inside a planter, it could easily be placed in the ground.
I would recommend extending the length of the pole by 3′ or adding a steel tip to the end of the pole.
Cementing or packing rocks around the post/dowel would also help ensure the post stays upright.
This hanging basket column is perfect for any garden without a doubt.
