How to Build a Cushion Stool from Scratch 2026

building a shock-absorbing stool from scratch can be one of the most complex and crazy DIY jobs you can do to surprise everyone.

Well, since I just got that amazing idea of making a unique creative stool out of an old cushion, I wanted it so bad and the only way to get it is to build one for myself.

So I just brought an old car shock absorber from the junkyard near my workshop. Now, to keep the idea complete, more authentic.

I brought a complete set of shock absorbers for the car with the disc brake and pads.

This proved to be a good idea as later the disc brake assembly helped us keep the C.G of the stool low and acted as a footrest as well.

Now let's get our hands dirty...

Steps to build a shock-absorbing stool from scratch:

Step 1: Disassembly

To begin, we disassemble the entire jump and the first thing we must lower is the highly compressed spring. It is a substantially large shock and the spring has a good amount of potential that can easily hurt anyone. There is a nut on the top of the spring cap that allows you to remove the spring. I would highly recommend using a decompression tool to safely remove the spring and when removing that nut, make sure to keep your body off that shaft.

As the spring is removed, the next thing is to loosen any springs you find there. Once we get all the parts, it's time to clean them.

Step 2: Remove debris and degrease

Now the shock absorber I brought seems to be in good condition, but believe me, it is very dirty and greasy. So to clean all the parts, what we are going to do is first remove all the dirt and debris with a metal wire brush.

It took a lot of efforts to achieve that stage of brushing in all those parts. Luckily, all the pieces were covered with so much dirt and grease, which prevented the surface from developing.

All parts were washed with gasoline to remove grease and oil from the surface of the parts.

Step 3: Clean the parts

Even after washing all the parts with gasoline, they seem to be very dirty and I was sure that if we continue with the paint job now we won't be able to get a good finish.

So we went a step further and got all the parts sandblasted and the results were too satisfactory. Now all the parts are properly cleaned and the surface is ready to be painted.

Step 4: Painting the parts

Now all parts are painted with spray paints. I have used a matte black finish on the main body and bright red and yellow on all other parts.

The paint job produced excellent results and I was extremely pleased with how well we managed to get all of these pieces together after a lot of hard work.

Step 5: Stool

The stool support is made using 5mm sheet metal. The base is cut in a triangular shape and to which we have added three legs that measure almost 6 inches long. We have drilled a couple of holes that will help us mount the base to the bottom of the jump.

When we finished welding all the pieces, we painted them matte black and now the stand is ready to join the base of the jump.

Step 6: Assembling the pieces

Next all the pieces were assembled together. We first mounted the bracket to the base, which helped us get through the remaining parts easily. Next, the disc brake assembly is assembled.

Now, to unzip the spring and give the stool some room when someone sits down, we simply cut the spring with an angle grinder before painting that. So next we assemble the spring into place.

Step 7: Assembling the top plate

The top plate that came with this download was in very bad condition, so we brought a new one. This plate allows us to make the rotating top. So we drilled three holes and threaded them so we could mount the top of the stool onto this plate.

Step 8: Top of the stool

The top of the stool is made of old wood. These boards are 7 inches wide, so I glued three of them together. Once the glue dried, we cut a circular disk with a jigsaw that measures almost 14 inches in diameter. The disc is then sanded with an orbital sander. When I finished the surface, I applied a couple of coats of clear varnish which gives the top of the stool a very nice look.

I then drilled three holes in the top of the stool and counted them with the reddened Allen key bolts.

Step 9: Results

The final results were simply stunning and the stool turned out to be an eye-catching object in our workspace.

It turned out to be a great transformation and a satisfying project as well. Greetings!
