How to install herringbone wooden floors in any room, herringbone parquet, a floor pattern with ancient traditions, is once again an absolute trend. This is not surprising, because it is elegant and versatile, and can be installed in large and small spaces.

Procedure

The first image represents a chevron pattern: all the pieces come together at a 45 degree angle. This means that all your cuts must be cut at an angle.

The second image represents fishbone. Your pieces meet on the sides, which means you make straight cuts everywhere except where you meet the walls.

Where to start when installing the herringbone

1.- The first thing you need to do, after cutting the boards, is determine the center line with which your floor will align.

2.- With herringbone, the center line is not as obvious as with the chevron, but once you get used to finding it, it is not difficult.

3.- Cut a triangular corner from a piece of plywood. Use this triangle to ensure that the boards are consistently at a 90 degree angle.

4.- Start by screwing the triangle into the ground (aligning it with the chalk line in the center) so that it wouldn't move when they pressed the boards against it. Start about 6 inches away from the wall, because that was not a perfectly straight line

5.- The next step was to nail the boards! We didn't use glue, because our boards were long enough to nail twice per board. This held them completely firmly enough.

How to keep boards straight?

6.- One trick we found was to slide a spare piece next to the board you're nailing, pushing it in as you nail, so the boards don't slide even the slightest bit out of place.

7.- The next step is to simply continue nailing the boards, checking with a "square" as often as possible that your boards are square (it's an L-shaped piece of metal that looks like a ruler.)

8.- These parts of the installation are quite quick: as long as it remains square, installing the straight line pieces is quick.

9.- The difficult part comes when you get to the edges of the room: this is where you have to make strange cuts to fit everyone in
