Today we will show you an incredible DIY job of how to make a planter with pallets, which you can do yourself in simple steps.

These planters are intended to house two large pots in a more attractive way.

For me, working with pallets requires a fair amount of work, but I like the feeling that the cycle of something that would have gone to landfill has been increased.

Steps on how to make a planter with pallets

Step 1: Pallets

When searching through the stack of pallets, look for the pallets with the most usable wood. The length of the slats is ~3 feet. The thickness varies from ½ to ¾ thick. The width of the slats can vary from 2.5 to 6 inches.

Step 2: Deconstruction

Breaking down pallets requires a decent amount of work. Use a jig or circular saw to cut the ends. Remove the wood from the center support. This should give you 8 to 14 boards per pallet. Remove the nails from the slats.

Step 3: What's left?

Before you begin cutting, determine the best pieces to obtain the desired width (see drawing). I had multiple long pieces with cracks and/or damage on one side. I was able to cut out the damage and still have usable parts.

Step 4: Cutting/Sanding Boards

Please refer to the drawings in the introduction for the length of each board. After cutting the pieces, sand them with sandpaper to remove any rough spots or major smudges/paint... Unless that's your desired look.

Step 5: Frame

Assemble the top frame (nail and glue)

Step 6: Platform

Assemble the lower platform (nail and glue).

Step 7: Ready to build

Step 8: Lateral fixation

Attach the sides to the top frame and bottom platform (nail and glue).

Step 9: Border

Attach the side trim to the top sides (nail and glue). Attach the top edge (nail and glue).

Step 10: Clean

Sand again

Step 11: Finishing or painting

Finish as you wish. The version shown is finished with red oak stain and coated with an outdoor urethane.

Step 12: Finished
