Step 1: Determine the dimensions

My specific door measures 40 1/2″ wide by 84″ high, but you must measure the dimensions of your door opening to customize these plans to your specific needs. I went around the outside edges of the door frame to get my width and wanted to go a few inches above the top of the molding. Just remember to leave at least a 1/2″ gap between the bottom of the door and the floor, depending on the type of floor.
Step 2: Cuts the Frame Rails and Studs

Using the cut list, cut the frame rails and stringers to fit the 2x4.
Step 3: Slots in the frame

Once the frame components have been cut to size, use a Router to cut a 3/4″ wide by 1/2″ deep slot in the frame components as shown. Please note that the mid-frame rail will have a slot on both edges, where all other frame components will have a slot on only one edge. Use a 1/2″ straight cut bit. This is best accomplished by placing the cutting edge of the bit 3/8″ from the guide and the depth 1/4″. Make a pass on each side (left and right) to obtain a 3/4″ wide x 1/4″ deep groove on all components. Next, set the final depth to 1/2″ and make a second pass to complete the cuts. Use a scrap piece to test your setup. The wood plank panels will need to fit into the groove, so test them and adjust as necessary.
Step 4: Tabs on the Frame Rails

The 3 frame rails (top, middle, and bottom) will need tabs on both ends to fit snugly into the slots in the frame studs. The tongues will be 3/4″ wide x 1/2″ deep. Use the same 1/2″ straight cut bit and set its depth to 3/8″ and adjust its edge even with the guide. Test your cut on a piece of wood to make sure it fits before making final cuts. This is a good time to sand the frame components.
Step 5: Cut Bottom Panels to Length

Using the cut list, cut the bottom panels to the length of the tongue and groove wood planks.
Step 6: Cut Left and Right Panels to Width

I recommend attaching the bottom trim panels firmly (sliding the tabs into the slots), and then adjusting the bottom frame rail centered on the top evento obtain the final width of the panel.
Mark the left and right panels at the end of the tab on each end of the rail and cut to width using the table saw.
You may want to cut them 1/16″ short on each side to account for any lean that may be present.
I recommend cutting the respective top panels to the same width and at the same time, since you will have the table saw already set up for each cut. This is a good time to sand the top and bottom panels.
Step 7: Assemble Bottom Panels

Once you have cut the bottom panels lengthwise and widthwise, assemble them along with the left frame rail, bottom frame rail, and center frame rail. You may have to use a rubber mallet to tap them into place.
I started by sliding the assembled panels onto the Left Frame Stile and then pressed on the Bottom Frame Rail, and then touched the Middle Frame rail.
You can also slide panels one at a time and tap them instead. You'll have to find what works best for you.
Step 8: Cut Top Panels to Length
To get the final length of your top panels, slide the left top panel toward the left frame ridge and the center frame frame.
Assuming the depth of your slots is 1/2″, they will need to be 3″ shorter than the end of the Left Frame Stile to allow the Top Frame Rail to slide into place.
Step 9: Assemble the top panels

Duplicate the steps taken to assemble the bottom panels to assemble the top panels, sliding them onto the Left Frame Stile, the Middle Frame rail, and the Top Frame rail.
At this point, it will also slide into the vertical of the right frame.
Step 10: Glue the right side

After checking the final fit, remove the Upright from the Right Mount and apply wood glue to the entire slot and to the tabs and ends of the panels. Slide the Vertical Frame Right back on and use bands or clamps to hold it in place. Check the square and make adjustments with a rubber mallet, then tighten the clamps. Let dry overnight.
Step 11: Glue the Left Side
Remove the straps/clamps and slide the Left Frame Upright out. Apply wood glue throughout the groove and to the tabs and edges of the panels. Slide the Left Frame Vertical back on and hold firmly. Let dry overnight.
Step 12: Sanding
Do a final sanding and wipe with a semi-wet cloth to remove dust.
Step 13: Desired finish
I left mine unfinished, but installed the door handle and some molding to fit the decor of the house, but you can also paint.
Step 14: Assemble the door

There are many sliding/rustic door options available. After you find one you like, follow the manufacturer's instructions for hanging the door.
