Painted Branches Bed Headboard, headboards are a great resource to decorate our bedroom. With them we have the opportunity to add color and texture to the room and become the center of attention. Of course, without forgetting its specific function in addition to aesthetics, sometimes complemented with additional elements, such as storage space.
Step 1: Materials and tools
Materials:
- Twin Fjellse bed frame or whatever you want
- Branches about 5/8 inch – 1 inch thick
- Latex paint: in various colors of your choice. Satin finish or top gloss finishes work well for furniture.
- Bare wood primer
- Transparent paint varnish
- Sandpaper: coarse
- Rags
- Wood glue
- Aluminum foil
- A piece of fabric, or decorative rope...
Tools:
- Brushes: I used a 1 inch, 1.5 inch and 2 inch synthetic brush. I also used a very small brush for touch-ups.
- Sierra
- Glue gun
Step 2: Print and Paint the Bed Frame Parts

Start by painting the individual Fjellse pieces. Synthetic brushes are best for water-based paints such as latex paint.
You won't need to paint the three header heads that the Fjellse comes with. We're not going to use those.
You also won't need to paint the inside sides of the bed frame, as shown in the last image, because they will be covered by the mattress.
- Use a cloth to remove any dust particles from the bed frame pieces before each layer.
- Apply a coat of bare wood primer, brushing it with the grain of the wood. Let dry.
- Apply your latex paint, brushing with the grain. Let dry.
- Apply a second coat of paint if desired.
Step 3: Build the header

Following your Ikea instructions, build only the headboard of the bed frame, leaving out the three central axes.
Another adjustment you will need to make is to flip the top horizontal piece so that the slot and holes are facing up. Do the same with the bottom piece, turning it over so the holes are facing down. These holes are used for joining.
Rotating the holes from the center will prevent them from getting in the way of gluing the branches to the headboard.

Step 4: Adjust the branches to the header

Figure out how you want your branches to be arranged.
Then use a hand saw to cut the branches downward.
It is better to cut branches too long than to cut them too short; You can always make them smaller.
After sawing, use a groove shaper (a tool like a cheese grater, but for wood) to shave the branches to a more accurate length and angle.
Be sure to constantly check the length of the branch with the header, so you don't shave too much.
Step 5: Sand the headboard

Sand the header where it will make contact with a branch. You can see in the first picture where the header was sanded around where the r was gluedlove.
Pieces of sandpaper torn between your fingers work well for sanding these small areas.
This step helps the glue stick better and gives you a marker of where the branches go.
Step 6: Paint the branches

- Start by peeling any loose bark.
- Wipe the adhesive cloth over each branch before priming, and between coats if necessary.
- Apply a coat of bare wood primer. Let dry.
- Apply a coat of latex paint. Let dry.
- Spray clear coat to seal any part of the branch that is not covered by paint and prevent the paint from peeling.
Step 7: Attach the branches

Use wood glue to glue the branches in place.
Stick them to the spots you sanded on the headboard in step 5. Wipe away excess wood glue with a damp cloth.
You will find that most branches will fit snugly enough to stay in place as they dry.
However, some of the angled branches may have less tension and will need to be secured in place while they dry. Aluminum foil works well for this.
Check the drying time of your wood glue and allow to dry.
Step 8: Touch up the header

Use a small brush to paint over any visible glue, sanded areas or scratches.
Step 9: Cover the Top Holes

Now we have to cover those holes at the top.
I used a piece of fabric, but you can use whatever you want: buttons, decorative ribbon, small seashells, beads, etc.
Step 10: Build the bed

Follow your Ikea instructions to finish building the bed frame. That is! It could also work on any bed, it's all down to creativity. Greetings!
