Planters Using Old Jeans, there are a number of unusual uses for the items I've used in this project, from blue jeans to pantyhose!
You can make this planter any size you want! However, you can use any size jeans and things you already have for free!
Step 1: You will need…
- Blue jeans
- A pair of shoes (high-tops or shorts are best)
- Oval container (can be plastic or metal, shape is more important)
- Wooden blocks 2×3 or 2×4
- Piece of 1/4″- 5/8″ plywood
- Countersunk head wood screws (at least 1 1/2″ long for this project and longer if you wear taller jeans)
- Two plastic vegetable bags (recycled from the grocery store)
- Long socks (a great opportunity to recycle the ones with runs on them)
- Soft foam
- Quick setting cement
- Painting (mixing) tape (painters and/or packing tape)
- Belt (optional) recycled plastic container (to mix cement)
Step 2: Cut the legs and drill

Measure the jeans from the hem to just above the crotch area and add some extra height for the shoes (my measurement was 14 1/2″).
Cut two 2x3s to the length you measured.
Drill through the center of one end with a drill bit large enough to accommodate the width of the wood screw.
Step 3: Cut the Deck

Draw an oval shape on the piece of board and cut it with a jigsaw or jigsaw.
Since this project is small and the planter won't be too heavy, I have used 1/4″ plywood, but you will want a heavier piece for larger projects that will be loaded with plants.
Place the wooden posts in each shoe and place the oval on top to determine the leg spacing.
Drilled two holes in the oval platform (mine were 3 3/4″ apart).
Attach the oval platform to the wooden posts.
Countersink the screws slightly into the platform so they don't protrude and interfere with the planter once it is up.
Step 4: Leg Pad

Next, cut the soft foam in half.
Glue half to the flat end of each bolt (this will be the front).
As I mentioned, you can substitute soft foam or even cut a few pieces of an old comforter to wrap your legs.
If you use softer material, I usually staple it and also cover it with a nylon stocking to keep everything in place.
In this case, I could have added a little more packing tape; I didn't really need the stocking, but I wanted to demonstrate it as an option to prevent things from changing.
Step 5: Cement shoes and legs

Now you're ready to put everything together, but before you do, unlock the top of the shoes to expose the inside and insert two plastic bags; the kind you use to hold your vegetables at the grocery store.
Sometimes I don't add the plastic if the shoe or boot is made of sturdy leather, but because I'm working with a relatively porous fabric, the plastic will prevent water from the cement mixture from soaking in.
The cement is stabilized and weighted in the pot to prevent it from tipping over.
Pour some water into a recycled plastic container, add the cement and mix well with an old paint stick.
To support the legs on the zapBefore pouring, I temporarily added a piece of wood and a small screwdriver to the heel; just be sure to remove your items before pouring the cement! Pour the cement into each shoe.
Mix it with the paint stick to make sure it is evenly distributed around the legs.
Step 6: Finesse and clothing

Once the shoes are full and before the cement is dry, lift the tabs, lace the shoes and tie them together so the cement can finish setting.
You can also trim the plastic bags that extend over the top of the shoes.
Once the cement is completely set, remove the oval piece of wood temporarily.
Add the pants to the legs, then replace the oval wooden platform.
As I curled my right leg back in, I decided to swing my foot a little for a more casual pose. Lift the pants and insert the flower pot so that it sits on the wooden platform.
If this pair of jeans does not already have a fitted wear band, I would normally add a belt at this point to tighten the jeans around the pot so it doesn't move.
I could glue the pot to the platform if I wanted to make it permanent, but I like the option of being able to remove it if I want to change the plant materials it contains.
Step 7: Make sure it is stable!

The back will look a little loose, so I filled it out by stuffing some cotton in the area between the pot and the seat of my pants.
The last image shows it from the front before adding the plants.
Step 8: Done!

Everything is done after adding the plant materials!
The only thing I would improve on this project would be if I could walk to the sink to get a drink of water, but that may be a little beyond our skill set.
Step 9: Other styles

I think the little ones are SO adorable but my favorite has to be the pair of bride and groom planters I made for our wedding to adorn either side of the aisle at our venue!
