Valve Announces Steam Frame VR: A Computer in Your Head! 2026

Valve, after announcing the Steam Machine, also showed us the Steam Frame, a VR Headset. Valve's new device can play games, both VR and simple, as it's practically a computer in our head. The new device will run on a Snapdragon processor.

Steam Frame is originally a streaming VR Headset. It also comes with a wireless adapter, with dual antenna, that connects to our PC or any other Steam device, such as Steam Deck and Steam Machine. The dual antenna is used to connect for video streaming from PCs, but also to maintain internet connectivity.

The Steam Frame comes with two 2160×2160 LCD technology screens with a 72-144Hz refresh rate. The headset has a very clever way of displaying high resolution content. Cameras inside it will observe our eyes so they know exactly where we are looking. Thus, the screens will play the maximum quality only on the points that our eyes focus on. This way you won't need terribly high performance. At the same time, we will find four other high-resolution monochrome cameras inside the device, with infrared LED lights, so that they can see even in low light. These cameras take care of monitoring our controls and hands, as well as our surroundings. Of course the headset has stereo speakers.

The headphones have a split controller arrangement. The controls use a standard gamepad layout, so VR games, as well as non-VR games, work as expected. These controllers also use the improved second-generation magnetic joysticks used in the new Steam Controller. Each has an AA battery with a claimed life of around 40 hours.+

But the impressive thing about the Steam Frame is that it is a computer running SteamOS. It runs on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, along with 16GB of LPDDR5X. We will find it in versions with 256 or 1TB of UFS storage space, expandable with microSD. The device comes with a 21.6Wh battery, which allows it to operate completely autonomously, without connecting to another machine, to play games. In fact, it can play x86 games on ARM64, through the company's emulation, called Flex, and it can also play Android games directly, since both are based on a Linux kernel.

Valve will be releasing a Steam Frame development kit soon, which should help improve compatibility. It will also provide pre-converted versions of x86 games so you can run them directly without having to emulate them in parallel, improving performance.

Like the Steam Machine it will be available in early 2026, with a price yet to be announced.
