The Argentina World Cup win over England sparked controversy after players displayed a banner reading 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas,' referencing the Falklands war. The semi-final in Atlanta saw Argentina rally from 1-0 down with five minutes left, scoring twice to reach a second straight World Cup final against Spain. The banner reignited the long-standing territorial dispute over the Falkland Islands, known as Islas Malvinas in Argentina, which led to a 74-day conflict 44 years ago.
Political Banner Stirs Emotions
Lisandro Martínez and Giovani Lo Celso held up the banner, grinning and waving to fans. The display drew comparisons to Iranian Americans waving pre-revolutionary flags during Iran's World Cup match last month, which proceeded without incident. Martínez, who plays for Manchester United, said the banner stirred deep emotions for veterans of the conflict. 'I can picture a Malvinas veteran seeing that and weeping,' he stated.
