A newly created underwater world in the Mediterranean is intended to attract diving tourists to the island - although it could still be a year before it opens. But what you can expect is already clear.
A diving park with artificial reefs and sunk naval ships is being built in the northwest of the Greek holiday island of Crete. The Apokoronas Diving Park is the first fully licensed diving park in Greece, according to the Cretan Tourism Authority. It is designed for snorkelers and scuba divers of various skill levels.
Around 50 percent of the construction work has been completed, says Kyriakos Kotsogloumit, the island's deputy tourism governor. Whether the park opens this year depends on the progress of construction and the necessary safety checks. The diving park is expected to go into full operation in April 2026, i.e. in just over a year.
Location advantages of the diving park on Crete
The park is located approximately halfway between the cities of Chania and Rethymno in Ombrosgialos Bay. According to Kotsoglou, the location was chosen, among other things, because the water is very clear and the area is free of currents. There is also a lot of sea life. Another plus point is that the diving park is easily accessible - even by car.
In addition to several dozen artificial reefs that were created using technology from the Greek Marine Research Center and offer refuges for fish, two sunken Greek Navy warships should also be able to be explored underwater.
The Greek government wants to promote diving tourism in the country - which is also why the construction of this diving park was approved in late summer 2024.
