Thailand School Shooting: Teen Suspect Kills 7, Injures 30 2026

Thailand school shooting has left at least seven dead and more than 30 injured after a 14-year-old suspect opened fire at Debsirin School in Bangkok. The incident, which unfolded on October 3, 2023, has shocked the nation and reignited debates over gun control and school safety in a country with high private gun ownership.

The suspect, a student at the school, first killed his grandparents at their home using a handgun belonging to his grandfather. He then traveled to Debsirin School, where he shot multiple teachers and students before turning the gun on himself. Police confirmed that five teachers were among those shot, with at least nine of the injured in severe condition.

Key Details of the Thailand School Shooting

The attack began early in the morning, causing panic among students and staff. Witnesses described hearing rapid gunfire and seeing chaos as students fled for safety. The school has suspended all classes from October 10 to August 14, with staff instructed to work from home during this period.

Casualties and Medical Response

Thailand's health minister, Phatthana Phromphat, visited Phra Nang Klao Hospital, where three critically injured patients were admitted. Two received surgery and are now stable, but a 12-year-old girl with a bullet wound to the head remains in a coma. At least 30 people were injured overall, with nine believed to be severely wounded.

Local authorities and medical staff have urged the public to donate blood to support the injured. The Higher Education minister was among those who donated blood at a nearby hospital, setting an example for community solidarity in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Suspect Profile and Motive

Thai police reported that the 14-year-old suspect acted under “stress” and appeared to have planned the assault. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the suspect showed signs of premeditation, though the exact motive remains under investigation. Authorities have collected evidence from the suspect's home, including computer equipment, to better understand his actions.

This incident marks one of the deadliest school shootings in Thailand's history, following other mass shootings in recent years, including the 2020 Nakhon Ratchasima shooting that killed 29 people.

Gun Control and Public Safety Measures

In response to the shooting, Prime Minister Charnvirakul has vowed to propose a new law restricting public firearm carrying. Thailand has one of the highest rates of private gun ownership in Southeast Asia, with an estimated 10 million firearms in civilian hands. The government faces pressure to implement stricter regulations to prevent future tragedies.

Public safety experts emphasize the need for comprehensive measures, including background checks, mental health evaluations, and school security protocols. The shooting has also sparked discussions about youth access to firearms and the role of family environments in preventing violence.
