The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is taking on the hugely challenging task of staging two experimental novels: Susanna Clarke's Piranesi and Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway. Co-artistic directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey announced the ambitious project, which brings these literary works to the stage for the first time.

Why These Adaptations Are So Challenging

Both novels are celebrated for their innovative narrative styles, posing significant conundrums for adaptation. Woolf's 1925 classic uses stream of consciousness to explore the inner lives of its characters, while Clarke's 2020 award-winner immerses readers in a surreal, labyrinthine world. The RSC aims to tackle what they call 'a century-old theatrical preoccupation: the exploration of inner life on stage.'

Mrs Dalloway: Bringing the Inside Out

Tamara Harvey will direct Mrs Dalloway, adapted by Zoe Cooper. Harvey describes the process as 'hugely challenging' but praises Cooper for creating 'this extraordinary sense that we as an audience are flowing in and out of people's minds, in and out of different moments in their histories.' The production opens in the Swan Theatre in April and will be the third major adaptation of the novel staged in England within a year.

Piranesi: A Labyrinth on Stage

Susanna Clarke's Piranesi, which won the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2021, presents a different challenge. The story follows a man trapped in a labyrinthine mansion with an ocean on one floor and the sky on another. Daniel Evans notes that for the first 20 pages, 'you have no idea what's going on.' The adaptation must capture this sense of mystery and wonder while making it comprehensible for a theatre audience.
