Reynisfjara Beach in the south of Iceland, which is extremely popular with tourists, has a traffic light system. Not to regulate traffic, but to warn of a deadly danger emanating from the Atlantic. Because time and again people go too close to the water and are then pulled in by insidious killer waves. In such a case, rescue is almost hopeless, which is why the traffic lights are now intended to ensure more safety.
Among the countless natural wonders in Iceland, Reynisfjara Beach is arguably one of the most popular with tourists. Its black volcanic sand and dramatic coastline make it a spectacular photo opportunity and a place to experience the power of the elements in all their might. But as beautiful as the beach is, it is also deadly. Accidents occur here again and again in which visitors are swept into the ice-cold water of the Atlantic by seemingly suddenly appearing waves. In such a case there is usually no rescue. Therefore, the Icelandic Tourism Board had an unusual idea in 2022: a traffic light system as an early warning.

As the official website of the authority reports, work on it was completed in December 2022. Since then, there have been several illuminated boards here to provide information about the particular danger posed by Reynisfjara Beach. In three languages, these tourists explain not to go too close to the water. And so that everyone really understands this, there is also a traffic light system installed on some boards. Green light means no danger, logically. However, if the yellow or even red light is on, you are no longer allowed to enter the correspondingly marked areas of the beach if you do not want to risk your life. The data used to control the traffic light warning system comes directly from the Icelandic Roads and Coastal Authority.
Deaths again and again
Before this unusual step was taken, there had been repeated death dramas on Reynisfjara Beach because people thoughtlessly ventured too close to the sea. And then became victims of so-called “sneaker waves”, as the Icelandic tourism website reports. “Sneak” means something like “to sneak up on” in English, and that’s exactly what this type of phenomenon does. In plain language, this means that even in calmer seas with smaller waves, true water monsters can suddenly arise and tear everything in their area into the sea with unimaginable force. The highest waves recorded in the area around the deadly Fairytale Beach were 40 meters. As much as a ten-story skyscraper.

Even experienced swimmers would have no chance in such a case and would either drown or die from hypothermia within minutes. A rescue is unlikely because no security personnel are deployed on Reynisfjara Beach. In any case, this would not be able to help someone who would become a victim of the waves on their own. And so in the future the traffic light warning system will inform visitors about how far they can literally go. In addition, a chain several hundred meters long was installed that leads directly from the parking lot and past the traffic light information boards on a safe path.

However, the aim of the special signs was not just to express bans, according to the tourism authority. But rather provide factual information and educate people about what they can do safely on Reynisfjara Beach. But they are aware that the danger has by no means been averted: "Signs, no matter how good they are, will not stop anyone who wants to go down to the beach at all costs. But they are necessary to guide as many people as possible to safe places where they can enjoy it in all its glory."
The official Icelandic tourism website also provides information on what visitors should definitely not do on Reynisfjara Beach. This includes, for example, turning your back to the sea for a selfie on the beach. When in doubt, “sneaker waves” can strike in a fraction of a second. Therefore, you should of course never go too close to the water or even swim or surf in it. Simply following other visitors in good faith can also become a deadly danger. And on the Black Beach, as it is also called, this not only comes from the sea, but also from rock falls and landslides.

Other deadly dangers
Even when the sea is calm, Reynisfjara Beach can pose a deadly danger. In the past, walkers were repeatedly surprised by the incoming tide and trapped in caves in the rocky coast. It is therefore advisable to check the tide times on an official website before visiting. The safest and most spectacular way to observe the power of nature on the volcanic beach is to stand on the cliffs from a certain height. Whether the traffic light system actually ensured more safety cannot be easily determined online. Of course, technology alone doesn't save lives as long as people are willing to take risks for a particularly spectacular picture. Apparently not even if they are fatal in the worst case scenario.
It was only during my research for this article that I slowly realized that I had already been to Reynisfjara Beach myself. In September 2017, in rainy weather, I stood with a few other brave souls on a cliff high above the sea and marveled for an eternity at the raw power with which the glacial-ice-blue waves broke on the coast. They were so powerful that sometimes the spray sprayed me in the face at a height of approximately 25 meters. I was particularly fascinated by a few jackdaws who put on a top-class acrobatic flying show in the stormy coastal wind.
