Wallabies Draw Argentina to Clinch Series Under Les Kiss 2026

The Wallabies secured a tenacious 28-28 draw with Argentina in Mendoza to clinch their first series win on Argentinean soil, keeping coach Les Kiss unbeaten after four Tests. Despite squandering a two-try advantage early and a two-man advantage late, the draw was enough to seal the series, extending their bright start under Kiss into a golden run.

Match Summary: A Gritty Encounter

In swirling winds, the match was an error-riddled arm wrestle in the first quarter. Returning winger Filipo Daugunu dropped the kickoff, setting a torrid tone. The Wallabies found their mojo with a volley of passes down the right blind side, but a try was disallowed when Ryan Lonergan was found to have fractionally crossed into touch. Five minutes later, captain Harry Wilson drove over to secure a 7-0 lead after 30 minutes.

Argentina fought back, and the match swung back and forth. The Wallabies fell behind late in the second half, but a 70th-minute penalty try was enough to level the scores and keep Kiss unbeaten. However, the team will rue this result, as they had opportunities to secure their first five-Test winning streak since 2021.

Historic Context and Rankings

This draw continues a historic deadlock between these rugby nations. Their last six Tests have produced different winners, and the series have been squared since 1987. Last week, Australia climbed over Argentina in the world rankings with a 27-21 victory in Jujuy. But this brave draw, played in tough conditions, was a more challenging test of character.

Key Moments and Turning Points

• Early disallowed try due to a marginal touchline call.
• Harry Wilson's try giving a 7-0 lead.
• Argentina's comeback to take the lead.
• 70th-minute penalty try securing the draw.
• Missed opportunity to win with a two-man advantage.

Implications for the Wallabies

The series win is a significant achievement, marking their first on Argentinean soil. Coach Les Kiss's unbeaten record is a testament to the team's resilience. However, the draw highlights areas for improvement, particularly in closing out games and capitalizing on numerical advantages.

What This Means for Future Tests

The Wallabies will look to build on this momentum in upcoming matches. With a growing confidence under Kiss, they aim to convert draws into wins and climb higher in the world rankings.
