This time I show you how to cut a square glass bottle with water in 3 simple steps, which you can do in your home with the necessary measurements.
How I did it: You can check it by watching DIY videos or you can follow the instructions below.
For this build you will need:
- Glass bottles
- Hot and cold water
- 80 and 280 grit sandpaper
Tools:
- Cutters glass
- Teapot
Steps to cut a square glass bottle with water
Step 1: Preparation
First of all, your need to make a nice pass with glass cutter.
To make that in a straight line and at the same height, I made this simple template from two pieces of scrap wood.
Step 2: A cut
I am using a regular glass cutter that can be obtained at any hardware store for a low cost.
It is necessary to make a strong pass around the bottle.
It is important to make a single cut.
Don't try to make a few passes to get a deeper cut.
That doesn't give better results, vice versa, it could make multiple division lines.
Step 3: Thermal stress
Prepare some boiling and cold water.
The idea is to use physics and let the thermal stress do all the work.
First, heat it and then cool it very quickly.
When heating, it is important to heat as much as possible on the cutting line.
Cold water will cause rapid heat stress and the cutting line will crack.
In this method, cutting round bottles is very easy, since round bottles have the same surface tension.
With the square bottle we have different surface tension on the sides and corners, so be prepared to fail.
Not all square bottles you will try to cut will be successful.
Step 4: In process…
At some point, only part of the glass will be removed, not the top.
Take your time and repeat the process on the break cut line.
In this situation, you can apply a light touch to make it faster.
Even when you did everything right, sometimes you don't get a good cut or you will get "crack" where you don't need it.
That's because all the bottles might not have visible mini cracks and your cut line might change direction.
Step 5: Sanding…
To smooth the edge I used 60 grit sandpaper and wet sanded to obtain an acceptable result.
To achieve a good finish, I finished with 280 grit sandpaper.
Step 6: Result
And here is the final result. No sharp edges, nice and shiny surface.
Step 7: Where to use it?
What about the purpose?
Well, it just depends on your imagination. Here are some examples from me. You could serve a sandwich in it.
Or to store some kitchen utensils. It could also be a great drinking glass. Or unique vase.
