Decorative Leaves Made of Wood, these decorative leaves are easy to make with a band saw.

You will need:

• A piece of wood for the leaves: 3″ wide by approximately 10″ long and 3/4″ thick.
• A piece of darker wood to cut the stems from: about 2″ wide by about 7″ long and 3/4″ thick.
• Wood glue and epoxy (optional).

I will show many images to illustrate the different steps.

Step 1: Prepare your cube sheet

Start by cutting four pieces of wood (e.g. oak, maple, cherry, pine, cedar, plywood), each piece 3″ square by ¾” thick. Glue all four pieces together into a 3″ tall cube. Be sure to align the grain direction of all four pieces.

Mark a diagonal line across one of the faces showing the glue lines, then cut the cube along this line on your band saw.

Sand the cut faces on a stationary belt sander. The faces must be flat and smooth to fit together.

Step 2: Make the dowels loose and glue the cube together

• Cut five wedges from a darker piece of wood, e.g. nut. These will serve as the stem of the leaf. The shims should be about 6 inches long, 6" tall, and about ¼" thick at the widest end. See drawing
• Align the two halves of the cube so that the glue lines point away from the stem like the veins would on a leaf, that is, the glue lines meet in a "V."
• Glue the wedges and the two halves of the cube as shown in the drawing and images.
• Be sure to put glue on the thin top faces of each shim to hold them together as shown in the drawing.
• I use epoxy glue for this step, since epoxy will bond stronger than wood glue when you have surfaces that don't match perfectly. The epoxy will fill larger gaps and still maintain a strong bond.
• Secure the glue with masking tape or use masking tape to hold the assembly (leaf cube) in place while the glue dries. Clamping can be a bit tricky, as the shims tend to slip when clamping pressure increases; however, clamping will provide a better glue joint.

Step 3: Cut the leaves

• First Cut: Mark a slightly curved cut line on the hub side of the blade. With the shank protruding diagonally upward and pointing away from the bandsaw blade, make a curved cut acrossfrom the blade hub and carefully cut all the way through the stem. See drawing and images. Discard the scrap piece.
• Second cut: Adjust the bandsaw fence to the desired thickness of its blades. I find that 3/16" works well for the thickness of the blade. Make the second and subsequent cuts, pushing the hub of the blade against the fence and following the contour of the previous cut.

You can also cut the sheets flat instead of making curved cuts.

You should be able to get about 10 leaves from your leaf bucket. Sand both sides of your sheets smooth.

Step 4: Form the leaves

• Now you have to decide on the shape of your leaf. You can make paper templates for the leaf shape or draw the outline directly on the leaf. For a paper template, cut a 3″ by 3″ square from printer paper, fold along the diagonal (shank), and draw half of the desired shape. Cut, unfold and paste on sheet to trace or cut.
• Use the band saw to cut the final blade shape.
• Round the edges of the leaf and stem by hand or with a detail sander. Finish with mineral oil, stain, polyurethane, varnish or whatever you like.

Here are some of the blades I have made with different hardwoods. The ‘striped’ sheets were made from 3/4″ plywood.
