DIY Hanging Pot Rack for a Country Kitchen 2026

To have everything you need within easy reach in your country kitchen, consider this unusual shelf. It doesn't rest on the wall—it hangs from the ceiling by four chains. Instead of a solid surface, it features a series of round wooden bars, perfect for hanging all sorts of utensils and pots using steel hooks available at hardware stores.

Building this shelf to complement your country kitchen decor only requires a drill press and a coping saw to cut the support beams and round bars. You can buy pre-planed materials at the desired section from home improvement centers.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Marking and Drilling the Support Beams

Trace the longitudinal axis along the two support beams. On this line, mark the centers of the holes, spacing them 150 mm apart. Using a drill with an adjustable bit, drill blind holes 20 mm deep. At the ends of the beams, attach turned wooden knobs using four dowels.

Creating Blind Holes

To drill blind holes with the adjustable bit set to 40 mm diameter, mount the drill on a column and hold the pieces firmly with a clamp. For precise work, a quality drill press makes all the difference.

Assembling the Bars

Before inserting the round wooden bars into the holes, apply a thin layer of white wood glue to each end. After inserting each piece, wipe off excess glue with a rag. Then apply a coat of water-based white wood paint to give your piece that authentic country kitchen feel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this rack for heavy pots?

Yes, but ensure the ceiling anchors and chains are rated for the weight. Use heavy-duty hooks and secure mounting hardware.

What type of wood is best?

Hardwoods like oak or maple are durable and look great. Pre-planed lumber from a hardware store works well.

How do I hang the rack securely?

Use ceiling hooks rated for at least 50 lbs each. Attach chains to the four corners of the beams, then to the hooks. Level carefully before loading.

Can I paint or stain the rack?

Absolutely. A water-based white wood paint gives a country look, but you can stain it to match your existing kitchen island or cart.

Where can I buy the chains and hooks?

Most hardware stores carry them. For a wider selection, check out home improvement supplies online.
