Today we will teach you how to make a secret door in a practical way, perfect for hiding in moments of risk or storing precious objects.
My good friends recently renovated their attic and were able to close off some of the "unusable" space in a secret room.
My friend has wanted to have a secret room his entire life, and with his first child on the way soon, the recent renovation was the perfect way to make it happen.
The idea is that your child, in about four years, will find a secret playroom in your house!
The renovation left me an opening to build the bookcase, framed simply as a short door frame. Although the walls are newly constructed, the floor and ceiling have existed since the 1920s.
Step by step on how to make a secret door:
Old construction adds a lot of variables to cabinet making, and I definitely ran into a lot of obstacles because of this.
Step 1:

The front face was made with pocket holes and fits the opening of the room.
Next, add pieces for the shelf fronts.
The cabinet is made of MDF, sized for the internal dimensions of the front frame.
It was a basic box, held together with glue and countersunk screws.
Punch pocket holes in the side panels, to connect the front frame.
Step 2:

Using a square, draw reference lines for placing the shelves.
Cut MDF for shelves and drill pocket holes in the bottom.
Using glue, line up the shelves, before screwing them on all sides.
Fill holes in the frame with wood filler, then sand lightly.
Add 1/8″ plywood to each shelf with a few nails, making it easy to remove in an emergency.
Step 3:

Glue a reinforcing strip to the back of the hinge side of the frame.
Use the included template to position the hinges.
These hidden hinges work great for this application. Drilling holes, per hinge instructions.
Clean the mortise with a knife and chisel.
Place the hinge, pre-drill the holes and then screw them into place.
Place heavy-duty casters, tilted FAR from the hinge side.
Step 4:

Cut pieces of wood, and wrap them in a book cover. Join them with glue.
Step 5:

Place the cabinet in place and mark the center of the hinge.
Cut the hinges as before. Screw the hinges to the door frame.
Step 6:

Make a bracket the same depth as the cabinet, to hold the latch.
Add pocket holes to attach to door frame.
Screw the bracket to the door frame, from both sides. Attach the stationary part of the latch to the bracket. Add a bracket and latch to the back of the cabinet.
Step 7:

Cut a slot above the latch for the cable to pass through.
Add an eyelet and heavy gauge wire to the back of the book.
Using a hinge, connect the book to the shelf. Feed the wire through the slot you made earlier. Connect the cable to the latch. Adjust it so that the book opens and closes the latch.
Step 8:

Everything ready! Take your time, adjust as needed, and it will work great!
Remember that you can make a secret door using the necessary tools, which will help you faster.
