On this occasion we present how to wax clothes or equipment in a simple way, which will allow you to do it yourself in your home.
The application of wax to the fabric gives it water-resistant and long-lasting properties.
Whether it's a backpack or work clothing, a waxed finish for your fabric is a smart choice for those who like to have a little mess in their lives.
As great as wax cloth, it is not for all items.
Heavy cottons like denim and canvas are excellent for waxing, as are heavy cotton/synthetic blends.
These fabrics are generally found in items such as backpacks, aprons, pants, and jackets. Your leather pants and polyester shirt are not so good for waxing.
As a natural finish, all waxed fabrics will eventually fade and will need to be reapplied.
Luckily, applying wax to fabric is easy, and I'll show you how!
Step 1: Tools + Materials

It doesn't take much to wax (or re-wax) your fabric, but you will need a special wax designed for fabrics.
- Waxing item (I'm wearing my work apron)
- Cloth wax
- Hair dryer
- Hard bristle brush
You probably have most of these things at home, and the wax stick lasts a long time and is good for many wax applications.
Step 2: Clean your fabric

Before applying wax, your fabric should be clean and free of dust and debris. In my case, I'm waxing my well-used work apron, which needs to be brushed, blown clean, hosed down with detergent, and then washed again before it's ready.

For large items like this, it is easier to work outside as it can cause problems.

Using the hose, laundry detergent, and a stiff brush, I cleaned the fabric to remove any residue and residual wax. Lowering a homogeneous surface of the base fabric will result in a more uniform application of the wax.

If you wash the fabric, make sure it is completely dry before moving on to any wax applications. Twisting the fabric with my hands to remove the water, I left the apron in the sun for a few hours until it dried.
Step 3: Wax

I used Fjallraven fabric wax, which is designed for their G-1000 line of semi-synthetic heavyweight garments. It is a hard wax bar that has a neutral odor.
I thought that any type of fabric can be used on almost any fabric, this technique works best with thicker fabrics like heavy denim and other similar types of fabrics.
Step 4: Apply the wax

Place the fabric on a flat, sturdy surface. Rub the wax into the fabric using a firm scrubbing motion, you should be able to clearly see where the wax was applied to the fabric.

Place the hair dryer on the high setting and wave it over the fabric to heat the waxed area. Keep the hair dryer a few inches from the fabric to avoid overheating and move the dryer in a circular motion.

I find it easier to work in small patches, heating to melt the wax completely before moving on to the next area. Pay special attention to seams and other areas that may require additional wax application.
Step 5: Wax put into action!

After the fabric has been waxed and cooled, examine forsee if you have lost any areas and if a second wax is required.
Waxed fabrics lose their waxed finish with use, so keep an eye on their finish and apply more wax when needed. I wax my apron once a year to help prolong its life and prevent it from absorbing any spills. Did you learn how to wax clothing or equipment? If so, don't forget to share it with your friends.
