Installing a Windshield Wiper on the Bathroom Mirror, it doesn't matter if you spend 2 minutes in front of the mirror brushing your teeth or an hour applying makeup and drying your hair, we all spend time in front of the mirror daily. If you're like me, once you're done taking your Luxury Shower, it will take you about 5 minutes to shave, brush your teeth, and comb your hair.
It is very annoying to take the time to wait for the mirror to clear, and leave lint from a towel on the mirror. The only option was to bring the technology invented more than a century ago to our bathroom.
Step 1: Parts
Materials:
- Old windshield wiper arm (recycled)
- New windshield wiper
- Suction cup
- Nylon Washers
Step 2: Planning
Measure and decide what length of blade you would like for your mirror. This will largely depend on the size of your mirror.
Step 3: Removing the wiper arm
Remove the entire windshield wiper arm. You may need to get creative with this step to separate everything.
Step 4: Straighten the wiper arm
Using a vise, hammer and anvil, straighten the wiper arm.
Step 5: Wiper Size
Due to the size of my mirror, I needed a really small wiper. Unable to find an 11-inch wiper, I purchased the shortest one available and cut it to the size needed.
- Remove the plastic covers
- Mark the center
- Mark where to cut
- Cut the windshield wiper material
- Cut the support material
- Replace the plastic end caps
Step 6: Clean the wiper holder
Clean and sand the wiper holder
Step 7: Drill Hole
Drill a hole the size of the suction cup post. If you use the suggested suction cup, butDrill a 5/8″ hole.
Step 8: Remove Bolt and Test Fit
Using a pair of pliers remove the pin on the suction cup. Just make sure the arm fits perfectly.
If for some reason there is a poor grip, you could possibly use duct tape to fill the gap.
Step 9: Cut and shape the arm
Now that the center is the right size, cut the bracket to size. Grind the face flat and shape it to your liking. Cut a channel in the back to accommodate the wiper arm.
I used an end mill to cut the channel. If you do not have access to these tools, you can skip this step.
Step 10: Attach the wiper arm to the bracket
Secure the arm and bracket with a screw and cotter pin. I understand that this design is extremely over the top, but I know it won't fall apart.
Step 11: Reduce Suction Cup
Cut the suction cup stem down and secure the wiper assembly in place using nylon washers.
Step 12: Fill the Suction Cup
This suction cup did not have a solid stem as I originally anticipated. Since it is hollow, the center needs to be filled. This can be done with Bondo or a simple wood filler like the one I use. Once dry, you can sand it.
Step 13: Paint
Peel off the actual suction cup material to protect it from paint. Paint black to match the wiper blade.
Step 14: Enjoy the mirror cleaner!
Install your new windshield wiper and enjoy clean mirrors!
