Reduced to the status of consumers rather than citizens, we witness disconcerting phenomena that stem precisely from being “passive digestive tubes of goods.” It is rare to hear anyone rebel against being called a consumer – a truly demeaning term, yet so accepted that we even have consumer associations. It seems no longer fashionable to be a community of people who feel political passions and identify with an ideal; or of artists, architects who believe in their mission to leave works that educate about beauty, or similar “trifles.” The powers that regulate the economy, and especially finance, and command today’s world, need a globalized consumer society to grow and prosper. They think of people only as consumers, concerned with capturing information to understand their tastes and make them consume more.

If “the creed” is consumption, people – who almost always harbor a desire to belong to a group with whom they share something – have unconsciously given rise to the phenomenon of object communities. Just a few examples: smartphones – there is the community of iPhone supporters and that of Samsung, each of whom would never buy the other. The same goes for cars: the Porsche owner looks down on the owner of an equally expensive Ferrari, and vice versa.

But one reflection starts from another great object community: the so-called Harleyists – motorcyclists distinguished by particular clothing and accessories, who choose loud, original American bikes. They stand in opposition to the BMWists, those who opt for comfortable, quiet German BMWs. Indeed, the story of these legendary American motorcycles begins with something very close to the DIY spirit, far removed from object communities. In 1901, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, two twenty-year-old childhood friends, William Silvester Harley and Arthur Davidson, mounted an engine they had built onto a bicycle, creating a prototype motorized bike. This vehicle was built in Davidson’s home garage.

From Object Communities to the Community of Making

Object communities are built around having – owning the same branded item. The community of making, on the other hand, is built around doing. It’s not about which smartphone you own, but about the project you’re working on this weekend. This shift from passive consumption to active creation is what truly empowers us. Whether you are restoring a classic motorcycle, building a piece of outdoor patio furniture, or simply fixing a leaky faucet, you are participating in a community of makers.

Why the Community of Making Matters

  • Empowerment: Creating or repairing something yourself gives a sense of accomplishment that buying never can.
  • Sustainability: Making and mending reduces waste and extends the life of objects.
  • Connection: You connect with others who share your passion, not just a brand logo.
  • Skill-Building: Every project teaches you something new, from wiring a lamp to assembling a storage shed.

To truly embrace the community of making, start with your space. A well-organized workshop is the foundation of any DIY project. Consider upgrading your home improvement tools and supplies. If you’re building a garden bench, you’ll need quality garden supplies. For indoor projects, proper lighting is essential to see your work clearly.

Practical DIY Projects for the Community of Making

1. Build a Custom Workbench

A sturdy workbench is the heart of any maker’s space. You can build one from scratch using lumber and a few basic tools. For inspiration, look at desks and work surfaces to understand dimensions and ergonomics. Add a storage bench component for tool storage.

2. Create a Vertical Garden

Transform a bare wall into a living artwork. Use recycled pallets or build a frame from treated wood. Plant herbs, succulents, or flowers. For the right environment, consider a greenhouse if you have the space, or simply use outdoor decor elements to enhance your garden wall.

3. Refinish a Vintage Table

Find an old table at a flea market or in your basement. Sand it down, apply a fresh coat of paint or stain, and seal it. This project connects you to the history of the object. Browse dining tables for style ideas, and don’t forget to pair your finished piece with comfortable office chairs if you’re making a desk.

4. Install a Pergola for Outdoor Living

A pergola defines an outdoor room and provides shade. This is a weekend project for two people. Use pressure-treated lumber or a kit. Complete the space with pergola accessories like string lights or climbing plants. Add outdoor heating to extend the season.

FAQ: Joining the Community of Making

Q: I’m a beginner. Where do I start?

A: Start small. Fix a loose drawer handle, paint a room, or assemble a piece of furniture. Each small success builds confidence. Check out home improvement basics for starter projects.

Q: What tools do I absolutely need?

A: A good drill, a hammer, a tape measure, a level, and a set of screwdrivers. As you grow, add a circular saw, a jigsaw, and a sander. Many of these can be found in the home improvement collection.

Q: How do I find other makers?

A: Look for local makerspaces, community workshops, or online forums. Share your projects on social media with hashtags like #diy or #makersgonnamake. You can also host a “fix-it” party where friends bring broken items and you repair them together.

Q: Can making really save me money?

A: Yes, especially for furniture. Building your own bookcases and shelving units or a nightstand can cost half the price of buying new. Plus, you get exactly what you want.

Q: How do I make my projects look professional?

A: Take your time with finishing – sanding, painting, and sealing. Use quality materials and measure twice, cut once. For inspiration, look at the craftsmanship in dressers and bathroom vanities to see how professionals handle details.

Conclusion: Choose Making Over Consuming

The next time you need something, ask yourself: Can I make it? Can I repair it? Can I upcycle it? By choosing to make, you step out of the passive role of consumer and into the active role of creator. You join a community that values skill, resourcefulness, and sustainability. Start your next project today – your hands, your mind, and your spirit will thank you.
