Rustic Cutlery Holder! 2026

Rustic Cutlery Holder, this idea came about while searching the web for something I can make with a bunch of hardwood boards around my workshop.

The design is simple, we will hold three jars each on an individual wooden board. The joints are attached to aluminum railings.

Now, to give a modern look to all of this, I've added a couple of LED strip lights in addition to each wooden board.

Now it's time to implement the design... Let's build.

Step 1: Materials and tools

This is a relatively simple project, so the materials list is:

• Wooden boards
• Glass jugs
• Rope
• 12v LED strip
• Aluminum tube
• Varnish
• Nails
• 5mm input connector
• Wires

The recommended tools for the project are:

• A saw
• Drill
• Drill bits
• Sandpaper or any sanding machine
• Screwdrivers
• Basic welding tools.

Step 2: Preparing the wood

First I started by preparing the edges of the boards.

The first cut is made to make the boards come out on one side.

I have now decided to have the middle board as the longest compared to the other two side boards which are 13 inches and 11 inches in length.

All these cuts were made with a chainsaw.

The sides were cut on a table saw.

Since the boards are almost 4 inches wide, I trimmed the edges a few millimeters just to make sure the boards were wide enough for everything to show through

Step 3: Sand the boards

The boards are sanded using an orbital sander.

Since the boards were rough and smooth, we went from 60 to 100 grit sandpaper to give the boards a smooth finish.

I have also made the corners sharp with the sander.

Step 4: Cover the boards

To protect the boards from moisture and weather, I have coated them with a couple of coats of wood varnish.

To give it a matte look, we have diluted the varnish with a thinner which gives the boards a stunning look.

In addition to maintaining the original look, I have not added any stains to the varnish.

Step 5: Aluminum Pipe

To hold the boards together I used a couple of square aluminum tubes. The tubes were cut to 14 inches long.

To mount the boards to the tubes, I drilled a bunch of 4mm holes in the tubes.

The center piece will be attached with four wood screws. The side pieces were attached using a pair of screws for each board.

The three boards were separated with an inch of space between them.

Step 6: LED Strips

To illuminate the wooden boards I used 12v LED strips.

These strips have a length of 5 meters which you can reduce to the desired length at the points indicated on the strips.

So for our boards I used two strips for the center board while one strip for the side boards.

As these strips come with a sticking side, so I have glued the back of the wooden boards.

All the strips were connected in parallel so that we can operate them at 12v. For the power input I have used a 5mm input connector.

The input jack is connected to one of the LED strips and then mounted to the bottom of the center plate.

Step 7: Preparing the jars

I have taken to using glass storage jars.

These jars are not only available randomly but also give everything an elegant look.

I used a brown rope to tie the jars to the wooden boards.

The rope is first tied to the jars and then passed through the holes I have drilled in each board.

To ensure the knot doesn't get lost, I've added a pair of cable ties to the end of each rope.

Step 8: Final Touches

Next, I added a little hot glue to the bottom of each jar to keep it straight along each wooden board.

To hang the stand, I made a rope hook by twisting the rope and adding super glue.

The hook is screwed into the top of the center wooden board.

Now, to power this piece of art, I have used a 12v DC power adapter.

Step 9: Final results

This cutlery holder turned out to be an elegant one. With those old rustic wooden boards and the backlighting that give this cutlery holder a perfect appearance.
