Small Ring Lamp Made of Oak, it is constructed from two halves. Each half has a pocket that, when the halves are joined together, creates an empty space inside the lamp base to hide the electronics.
WARNING: This project uses grid electricity! Home network supplies can kill someone if used incorrectly! Make sure you are comfortable and understand working with your home network supply before attempting this project.
DISCLAIMER: For this project I used my CNC Wood Router. I understand that not everyone has access to such machines, however, there is no reason this project cannot be completed with other tools. If you can cut circles and make a pocket, you're ready!
Basic Material List:
- Wood – I used the small oak I had left, measuring 210 x 120 x 20 mm
- Good quality wood glue
- A cable loop
- E12 bulb and E12 lamp holder
- Terminal block
- Nice cable – I used some of those nice braided ones
- An electrical connection and a lamp switch (optional)
Some other tools:
- Silicone gun
- Dremel with a sanding tool
- Sandpaper
- Clamps
Step 1: Cut the halves

The wood I used was already planed pretty well, so I didn't have to do anything else to flatten it. It's important to make sure at least one side is flat, as you don't want any gaps when you glue the halves together. I used a 3mm 4 flute tool at a speed of 1000mm/min and a depth of cut of 1mm per pass.
The pockets are 15mm deep, which is 3/4 of the total thickness of my material.
For anyone not using a CNC Router, these results can be obtained in several ways. The circles can be cut with a band saw and the pocket can be made with a handheld router. I would recommend printing the SVG drawing at a 1:1 scale and attaching it to the wood to use as a guide, sterilization glue might work well for this. I also suggest that you make the pockets first, while you have enough material to grab, and then cut the circles afterwards. It may even be possible to stack the two halves, so you only need to make each cut once. This is just a tip and there may be some unforeseen issues, so if anyone reading this is trying to do this project without the use of a CNC Router, I would love to hear your experience.

Step 2: Create a hole for the lamp holder

The next step was to create a hole for the lamp holder to sit in. This was done by first holding the lamp holder upside down and halfway up one of the lamp halves, as shown in the photo. I then used a pencil to draw a semicircle around the middle of the stand on the wood. That may sound confusing, so check the photo to see what I mean.
Once I had my mark, I used a Dremel fitted with a sanding drum to sand the wood until it matched the mark. This was done for the two halves of the lamp, so that when the two halves were joined together there was a round hole in the inside wall of the lamp. This is where the lamp holder will be located, make sure it fits tightly, while keeping the two halves of the lamp together.
Step 3: Wiring

The next step was to connect the lamp. The first thing I did was a small modification to the lamp holder. I cut a small section of the bracket to allow the wires to exit to the sides, this reduced the strain on them and allowed the lamp holder to sit lower on the base, as shown in the photo.
The twoLamp holder wires were connected to a terminal block. The lamp holder and terminal block assembly was held in the middle of the lamp to evaluate the fit. Once I was happy with its position, I marked an area that could be drilled to make a hole for the power cable to pass through. This hole is also shown in the photo.
The power cable was fed through the small hole on the back of the lamp and connected to the terminal block. Filament bulbs are not polarized, so it does not matter which way the wires are connected, however it is always good practice to use convention; black to negative (UK Neutral, blue wire) and red to positive (UK Live, brown). Lastly, I used a cable tie to secure the power cord and prevent it from coming out of the lamp. Once the lamp end is connected, you will want to connect the mains plug to the other end of the cable. Also, if you are using a switch, now is a good time to plug it in as well.
It's a good idea to test the lamp now to make sure it's attached properly, as once it's stuck, there's not much you can do to fix a problem. Be careful and keep your hands away from the connections during testing.
Step 4: Gluing and finishing

Once the lamp is connected, I glued the components in place with a hot glue gun. The lamp holder was glued and the terminal block was glued in the adjacent space. Next, I glued the two halves of the lamp together with wood glue and put everything in tight. I left it overnight to dry before removing the clamps and sanding the job to a smooth finish. I used some masking tape to cover the lamp holder to prevent dust from getting stuck when sanding.
And there we have it! The ring lamp is complete! If you decide to make your own ring lamp, I would love to hear about your experiences and ways the process could be simplified. I hope you enjoyed reading!
