Steps to Make PVC Pipe Look Like Natural Bamboo, I will try to show you how to make your own fake bamboo with PVC pipes. I know it's not "green", but it should really last!

Step 1: Cut and clean the PVC

If you are using an entire section of PVC pipe (they usually come in 10-foot lengths), then you can clean the entire pipe before cutting it. It doesn't really matter. We need to eliminate the ugly letters and all the leftovers (chemicals) from the production of PVC pipe. For this step I use Acetone because:

• It's cheap
• Works well
• I had it lying around

Be sure to follow the instructions for using whatever you choose as some cleaning products can be dangerous without proper ventilation!
I applied the acetone by wetting some paper towels with it and wiped it until the letters disappeared.

Step 2: Cut for the nodes

The nodes are the largest diameter portions of real bamboo and our fake bamboo can't be without it. In real bamboo these points are solid where the rest of the bamboo is hollow. Fortunately, these are easy to create.

At this point you may want to reference some pictures or some real bamboo if you can find it to find a good tilt spacing.

Another thing to consider is the location of the node if you want to have a solid node (like a cap or just a top).

Don't forget to place a cut line near the end of the pipe (3/4 inch minimum is what I've found) for this purpose. Using a razor blade, cut a line around the pipe. For a better effect, go around twice so that the cut is a little deeper.

Step 3: Make the nodes look good!

At this point, we will heat the PVC with a propane torch to give us a good image. Heating the pipe will give us a node that has a larger diameter than the rest of the pipe and will also give us a different colored ring that seems to give a more realistic look.

Work in one mode at a time, as this can help with consistency. I found that to give a fast burn mark, the tip of the blue flame should be on the PVC. Remember it should only burn lightly at this point!

Now heat the plastic until it is slightly flexible without burning it too much. I did this by holding the propane torch a few inches from the PVC and rotating it VERY quickly so that it heated the pipe evenly. The amount of time it takes will vary depending on the diameter of the PVC.

After the PVC is slightly flexible, compress the tube and apply some force to make it expand a little to a good size and then rinse it to cool it quickly so it keeps its shape. On a 3 inch pipe each node took approximately 5 minutes each. The 3/4-inch pipe takes less than a minute this way.

Creating top nodes that were solid was both easy and difficult. Buy a PVC cap for the same size pipe and, with a circular saw to the size of the pipe. At first, it was a bear, but after a few tries I got a system that was pretty good.

Before placing the solid nodes, paint all the pieces first! In and out! Now all you have to do is glue the solid node into place. My glue of choice was aquarium cement as it thickens and doesn't drip and can hold a bit of weight (like the lid that was punctured).

First, place a bead of glue slightly below the height you want it tothe node is. Next, lower the cutting cap into place (so it resembles a bowl) and let the glue dry. After it is dry put another drop of glue on top to fill the space between the pipe and the plug.

Using a gloved hand, spread and soften the glue. Since you smeared everything, the effect should come out pretty good first.

Using a 2-inch saw to place a node in a 2-inch pipe can leave a substantial gap to fill, but with 2-inch pipe and smaller you can make slightly larger hole saws (like 2 1/8″) to fill everything quite tightly.

Unless you plan to use the node as a water retaining structure, I do not recommend filling the small center hole of the guide bit to allow water to drain and pool.

Step 4: Sanding and finishing

Now the boring and fun part! I used lacquer to "dye" the PVC because it was recommended in some forums. Before starting the shellac, the entire PVC pipe should be lightly sanded. Sanding provides a slight texture for the shellac to grip. . I applied 3 coats.

This finish reflects the imperfections of natural bamboo. The bad thing is that it doesn't adhere to PVC really well even when all the instructions are followed. It is not recommended to cover shellac with polyurethane since shellac has a portion of wax that does not allow the polyurethane to adhere well.

Step 5: Final product!
