Italy is once again the most popular holiday destination in Europe, ahead of Greece and Spain. This is shown by this year's European Tourism Reputation Index, which is published by the market research institute Demooskopika. It is also worth taking a look at the popularity of the different regions within Italy.
The Regional Tourism Reputation Index, also created by Demooskopika, awards points in various categories to the most important holiday regions in Italy and selects the most popular of them. The criteria include visibility and interest in official tourism portals, their social media reach, popularity as a travel destination and the quality and evaluation of gastronomy, accommodation and cultural offerings.
The most popular holiday region in Italy
While last year the holiday region of Trentino-South Tyrol, located in the north of Italy, emerged as the most popular in the country, this year Tuscany secured the top position. Particularly crucial for Tuscany's good rating are its online popularity and the reviews of the tourist offer with almost 79,000 positively rated facilities and attractions.
Places 2 and 3
Second place in the ranking of the most popular holiday regions in Italy goes to Trentino-South Tyrol, third place goes to Sicily. Both regions were able to score points primarily due to the high number of positively rated tourist attractions.

Demooskopika's index includes a total of over 26 million indexed pages, around 8.3 million likes and followers on social networks and over 941,000 establishments and attractions, including 217,000 restaurants, 593,000 accommodations and almost 132,000 cultural attractions. "These analyzes show that an extensive offering and positive reviews contribute significantly to the perception of a destination. The more positive reviews a region collects, the more its reputation as an attractive travel destination increases," says the report.
