Mauricio Pochettino US Return: Risky, Expensive, Unnecessary 2026

Mauricio Pochettino's US return is risky, expensive, and probably unnecessary, as the Argentine coach has agreed to a new contract with US Soccer through the 2030 World Cup. After leading the US men's national team to a 4-1 round-of-16 exit at the 2026 World Cup, Pochettino's reappointment raises questions about cost, commitment, and whether a fresh approach might have been wiser. The decision to retain him signals confidence in his foundational work, but it also carries significant financial and strategic risks.

Why Pochettino's First USMNT Spell Was Considered a Success

When Pochettino took over in September 2024, the USMNT were underperforming and lacking identity. He brought energy and tactical clarity, implementing a system that maximized the talents of a golden generation. His best moment came with a stunning 4-1 victory over Paraguay, widely regarded as the team's finest World Cup performance. He also delivered two other solid displays, proving he could prepare the squad for high-stakes matches.

The Balogun Controversy and Its Impact

The team's momentum was disrupted by a political interference involving Folarin Balogun's suspension, which undermined morale before the Belgium clash. Despite that setback, Pochettino's overall record remains positive. He stabilized the squad and built a foundation that future coaches could build upon, but that doesn't automatically justify a long-term extension.

The High Cost of Keeping Pochettino

Pochettino's new deal is reportedly worth millions annually, making him one of the highest-paid national team coaches in the world. This investment is questionable when the primary goal—winning a World Cup on home soil—was not achieved. The financial outlay could have been used for youth development, scouting, or other infrastructure improvements that might yield better long-term returns.

Is There a Better Alternative?

Several up-and-coming coaches with international experience could have been available at a lower cost. Names like Jesse Marsch or Hervé Renard might have brought new energy and a different tactical approach. The US Soccer Federation's decision to stick with Pochettino may be based on comfort rather than optimal performance, which is a common pitfall in sports management.

Why Pochettino Might Leave Early

Pochettino has a history of seeking club roles with top European teams, such as Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea. If a lucrative club offer arrives during his tenure, he could be tempted to leave, leaving US Soccer in a lurch. The contract may include a release clause, but that would still disrupt the team's progress and force another coaching search mid-cycle.

• Risk of departure: Club offers could lure him away.
• Financial burden: High salary limits other investments.
• Diminishing returns: Players may tune out his message after a full cycle.
• Missed opportunity: New coach could bring fresh ideas and motivation.

Key Takeaways from Pochettino's Reappointment

While Pochettino deserves credit for improving the team, the decision to extend his contract is a gamble that may not pay off. The USMNT needs a coach who is fully committed and capable of delivering on the world stage. The next four years will tell whether this was a wise investment or a costly mistake.
