Notting Hill is one of the most famous districts of London, not least since the film of the same name was released at the end of the 1990s. Sunnytrips author Anna Wengel (Chiodo) was there and wrote down her favorite places and other tips for the iconic district.
Surely you have not only heard of the film “Notting Hill”, but have most likely seen it once or several times. When the romantic comedy with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant came out in 1999, both of them were many years younger, and you and I probably were too. I was so young that I didn't even see it in the cinema, but later saw it in various versions from video to DVD to streamed versions. On the one hand, because the film is nice, but especially - and now I'm finally getting to the topic of this text - because of the London district of Notting Hill.
A few years ago I finally went there myself while on holiday in the UK and to put it simply: I fell a little in love with Notting Hill. Especially in these magical houses, which reminded me a bit of San Francisco and at the same time are so very British, especially since it was pouring out of buckets of course. But even in the rainiest gray, Notting Hill was enchantingly beautiful. That's why I've put together a list of six exciting or beautiful or simply not-to-be-missed places in Notting Hill for everyone who would like to see the colorful district with its iconic bookstore, hipster cafes, vintage shops and its crowds of visitors once (or again). Including personal favorites and real classics.

6 tips for Notting Hill in London

If you've seen the film and have at least a minimal interest in travel literature (which I assume, since you obviously browse Sunnytrips), then you may remember the bookstore. In the film it was called The Travel Book Shop and is located at 142 Portobello Road, but is now a gift shop. The bookshop that inspired the film, however, is at 13-15 Blenheim Crescent and is called “The Notting Hill Bookshop”.
The bookshop with its blue sign was one of my few stops while walking through Notting Hill. Inside there was much more than just travel literature. In particular, it was so full that you were constantly stepping on each other's toes or pushing each other through the small shop with other literature lovers, film fans or simply people who just wanted to take photos of the admittedly very social media-friendly bookstore. Too much quickly and I was out again quicker than I expected. Nevertheless, a detour to the iconic shop is worth it.
Vintage shopping
One of the great things to do in Notting Hill, besides marveling at and photographing colorful houses and exploring film locations, is shopping. In addition to elegant, high-priced boutiques, vintage shops in this chic London district are particularly popular. There are quite a few of them and there are some really special treasures to be discovered. Found and Vision is one of them, Y2K Vintage Clothing or Vault Vintage, to name just three.

Pastel colored houses and Georgian architecture
The many colorful, often pastel-colored houses and colored doors are probably the image that comes to mind when you think of Notting Hill. For me it is definitely the one that is most present before and after my visit there. They are just lovely, these streets with all the Georgian houses and I personally love walking there. If you also fancy a stroll past colorful and otherwise pretty houses, check out Portobello Road, Lancaster Road, Colville Terrace and Elgin Crescent. Or just go with the flow and turn down any street you like. Because there are probably a few of them in Notting Hill, at least that's how I felt.
Café visit and personal tip
A nice café that is also suitable for bridging the countless rain showers or simply for a late breakfast for those who don't necessarily lick their lips at the thought of an English breakfast is Sunday in Brooklyn at 98 Westbourne Grove. This serves more Australian-American hipster brunch and reliably good coffee. The Butter Bakery Bar & Cafe with their delicious scones, Lowry & Baker and the Mawi Cafe are also nice. But the four mentioned are just examples of a wide range of great cafés in Notting Hill.

Portobello Road Market
Portobello Road is one of the most famous streets in London's Notting Hill. It's also home to the famous Portobello Road Market, a historic collection of street stalls that open almost daily and sell everything from clothing to antiques to fruit and vegetables. To the left and right of the market are the souvenir shops (like the film bookstore mentioned above), restaurants, vintage shops and many more in and in front of the iconic colorful houses.
Electric Cinema
One attraction in Notting Hill that I unfortunately missed but still want to see is the Electric Cinema at 191 Portobello Road. The ancient-looking cinema is one of the oldest operating cinemas in Great Britain and obviously invites you to watch films in the splendor of old times. So far from wobbly seats and big screens, but instead in the old style with red leather armchairs and tables with small retro lamps.
