DIY Sundial: Build Your Own Ancient Solar Clock 2026

What we propose can be considered the oldest solar clock: just like those that appeared around 1500 BC. It is built starting from a large flat stone on which the design of the hour lines is traced, first drawn on a sheet of paper. The lines are "traced" with an engraving bit mounted on a drill; with this, you also make the hole to house the style (or gnomon) which, in this case, is a wooden stick perpendicular to the dial. The small circles in the upper part indicate the hours before noon, those in the lower part the hours after noon.

DIY Sundial: Construction

The clock needs a support that can keep the front surface of the stone at a specific inclination. To make it, use a flat iron bar, cut into segments to be bent as needed before joining them with arc welding to complete the structure.

Four holes are drilled and threaded in the base bars to screw in four rubber feet with adjustment screws, which guarantee a firm support even if the ground is not level. For your home improvement projects, having the right tools and materials makes all the difference.

The pencil tracing is then carved into grooves on the surface using a grinding wheel mounted on the drill. The hour lines are vertical and all parallel to each other. Using the drill, you also make the circles that identify the hours. The style is fixed to the sundial plane at the noon line and perpendicular to the dial.

The DIY sundial must be aligned in two directions: the first is the inclination of the surface, which must be parallel to the Earth's axis. This is done by researching the latitude of the location and building the support accordingly so that the support bars are inclined relative to the floor exactly by that measure. The second condition to respect is to place the base of the plane along the East-West line. How to Read It

On a sundial, the time is read using the shadow of the style; the hour lines to the left of the noon line indicate the morning hours, those to the right the afternoon hours. In the first photo, the shadow touches the second line.

FAQ

What materials do I need to build a DIY sundial?

• A large flat stone or concrete slab for the dial face
• Wooden stick or metal rod for the gnomon (style)
• Drill with engraving bit and grinding wheel
• Flat iron bar for the support structure
• Rubber feet with adjustment screws
• Welding equipment (arc welder)
• Paper, pencil, and protractor for layout

How do I calculate the correct angle for my latitude?

• Find your location's latitude using a GPS or online tool
• The support bars must be inclined at an angle equal to your latitude
• For example, if you live at 40° N, the support should be angled at 40° from horizontal
• This ensures the dial face is parallel to Earth's axis

How do I align the sundial to true north?

• Place the base of the sundial along the East-West line
• Use a compass to find magnetic north, then adjust for magnetic declination
• The noon line should point toward true north (in the Northern Hemisphere)
• Check alignment at solar noon when the shadow is shortest

Can I use this sundial in any location?

• Yes, but you must adjust the support angle for your specific latitude
• The sundial will show local solar time, not standard clock time
• It works best in sunny climates with clear skies
• Consider adding a garden supplies station nearby to complement your outdoor project

How accurate is a homemade sundial?

• Accuracy depends on precise construction and alignment
• Expect accuracy within 5-10 minutes of solar time
• Seasonal adjustments (equation of time) can improve accuracy
• It's more of an educational and decorative piece than a precise timekeeper
