Today we will teach you how to install and repair hinges in a practical and effective way with the following tutorial that we will leave you.
Good installation and quality of the hinges ensure that the doors close and open correctly.
A well-maintained door offers greater safety conditions than damaged ones, in addition to allowing spaces to be isolated, air conditioning specific sectors and maintaining the temperatures of different sectors of a house.

Tools to install and repair hinges:
- Cardboard knife
- Screwdriver
- Chisel
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Hammer
- Drill and bit
Materials to use:
- Hinge or counterfront
- Common clove
- Cold cola
- Wooden dowel
- Screws
Correctly installing a hinge will guarantee the good condition of a door for a long time, without requiring any maintenance other than oiling and cleaning. Despite this, it often happens that our doors get hit by the wind or due to poor handling (slamming doors). In these situations, the hinges become loose and the doors stop closing and opening correctly. In this project we offer you all the necessary information, step by step, to correctly install and repair the hinges in your house.
A. How to install HINGE INSTALLATION
#1. Calculate and mark the area to be lowered
The hinge or counter face is used as a guide to mark the perimeter and depth of the recess.

#2. Cut the perimeter
- The perimeter is cut holding the chisel vertical with the beveled side facing the inside of the recess.
- Gently tap with the flat side of the hammer head just to the desired depth.
- Then start cutting on one of the sides where you can see the mark of the desired depth.

Recommendation:
For this project, a 3/4″ or 1″ chisel is recommended.
It is essential that this tool be properly sharpened and free of nicks.
It should not be forgotten that a sharp chisel is safer than a dull one, since less force is needed to reduce the wood and thus unwanted movements are avoided.
#3. Lower the wood
A series of parallel cuts are made 5 millimeters apart with the chisel at 45º from the surface and the bevel facing down.
The chisel is struck with the flat side of the hammer head to the desired depth.

#4. Remove leftover wood
- The excess wood is removed with the bevel of the chisel facing down.
- Hold the chisel at a low angle, almost parallel to the surface.
- Use hand pressure only to control the cut.

Recommendation:
It is important to keep your hands out of the line in which the chisel is operated, as it can easily slip forward.
#5. Recess refining
- The last cuts are made with the chisel almost flat and with the bevel of the chisel facing up.
- Then press with your hand.
- Check the depth with the hinge as you go.
- The wood continues to be removed from one side to the other. At this stage you have to pay more attention to cornering.

#6. Open new guide holes
- Open the hinge and place it in position. With a common nail mark a pilot hole.

- Drill the guide holes with a drill bit half the diameter of the screw body.

#7. Insert the screws
- Insert the screws and tighten. If these are short, replace them with longer ones.

B. How to repair HINGE REPAIR | Solution 1: Put Longer Screws
#1. Remove the original screws
Remove the screws one at a time so you don't have to remove the door.

Recommendation:
It is recommended, once the failure of the hinges is detected, to begin by checking the condition of the screws.
To do this, it is necessary to tighten all the screws and see if any of them continue to rotate without reaching a stop.
If the latter occurs, it means that the wood thread is rolled and must be adjusted as indicated below.
#2. Replace the screws
The original screws are replaced with others with the same body diameter (gauge), but 1/4″ longer. Longer screws should penetrate sound wood and support the door.

C. How to repair HINGE REPAIR | Solution 2: Install Plugs
#1. Prepare the dowels

Recommendation:
Remove the hinges one at a time to avoid having to remove the entire door.
#2. Put the dowels
Add professional cold glue to the tip of the dowel and insert it by gently hammering it into the holes.

#3. Cut off the excess dowels
The dowels are allowed to rest for 12 hours and what is left is trimmed with a cardboard knife or a chisel.

#4. Install the hinges
It is installed following the instructions from steps 6 onwards of the Hinges Installation of this document.
Recommendation:
If the screws are very difficult to install in place, rub soap on the thread and screw again.
