When we make an extension, remodel or simply want to change a door, it is necessary to know how to carry out this task step by step, know details and ways to take measurements so that the entire process is exact from fixing the frame to installing the lock.

Tools to use:

• 1 Cup drill (measured according to sheet metal)
• A wood drill bit
• Paddle drill bit (measurement according to sheet metal)
• Chisel
• 20 mm drill bit.
• Milling machine or tupi
• Measuring tape
• Hammer
• Bubble level
• Screwdriver bit
• Circular saw
• Drill

Materials to use:

• Cold cola
• Pine door frame set
• Knob lock kit
• Door
• Dogs
• Wood screws

There are several types of locks and door locks. The one we will install in this project is a knob for interior doors, which has a key on one side and a latch closure on the other. These locks come in a kit that includes: knob lock, sheet metal, installation template, fixing screws and keys for closing.

Before You Begin

Have the door opening plastered and level.

A. Steps to follow Frame installation

#1. Check the frame

• Check the framing of the feature where the door will be installed.
• Measure the diagonals of the opening. It is square if both diagonals measure the same.

Correct unevenness and framing

If there are differences when measuring the frame or checking the level of the feature, there are 2 solutions. The first is to trim the frame, either by sanding or planing the wood, and the other is to match it with more stucco.

#2. Measure frame

• Transfer the height and width of the feature to the frame tables.
• It can be done with a measuring tape or by facing the board to the feature.

#3. Cut frame boards

• Using the circular saw, cut the ends of the frame boards at a 45º angle.
• The joints must be at 45º.

To make the diagonal cut, you can use the circular saw by adjusting its blade at 45º. Also if it is not a very wide frame it can be done with a miter saw and saw.

To work with the circular saw and milling machine, you must wear eye protection glasses and a mask to avoid breathing in dust.

#4. Assemble the frame

• Present and join with presses the 3 pieces that form the frame.
• Pour cold glue on the joints.
• Fix with 3 screws per corner.
• Allow to dry for 30 minutes.

#5. Check level

• Present the frame in the opening.
• With the spirit level check its plumb line and level.
• The bubble must be in the center of the level.

#6. Perforations

• Use a wood drill bit to make holes in the frame every 30 cm.
• Switch to concrete drill bit and drill the opening.

#7. Frame fixing

• Put concrete plugs in the holes.
• Screw the frame to the opening.

B. Steps to follow Door installation

#1. Hinge distances

• Mark the location and dimensions of the hinges on the edge of the door.
• There are 3 hinges: the first at 10 cm. from the upper edge, the second at the height of the door and the third at 10 cm. from the ground.

#2. Make recesses

• Use the router to make the cutout to install the hinge so that it is flush with the edge.
• The recess must be 3 mm. (hinge thickness).

Another way

The recesses for the hinges can also be made with a chisel and hammer. It's a little slower, but just as effective.

#3. Fix hinges

• Screw the hinges to the edge of the door, using the fixings included in the hinge kit.

#4. Openwork in the frame

• Present the door in the frame and mark the hinges.
• Make the recess for the hinges with a chisel and hammer. The depth of this draft should be 3 mm.

#5. Install door

• Fix the door by screwing the hinges to the frame, right in the previously made recess.
• Use wood screws.

C. Steps to follow Lock installation

#1. Mark template

• Each lock kit comes with a template that must be presented on the surface and edge of the door. The recommended height is 90 cm.
• With the tip of a drill bit, mark where the template indicates that the holes must be made, both on the surface and on the edge of the door.

#2. Make the holes

• Using the drill and cup bit, make the holes in the surface of the door for the knob lock. It must be done on both sides of the door.
• Using the drill and the paddle bit, make the hole in the edge for the sheet metal.

Drill sizes

The installation kit specifies the measurements that the cup drill and the paddle drill must have; this will change depending on the type of knob lock that has been chosen.

#3. Present the lock

• Put the knob in the largest hole.
• The sheet goes along the edge. Mark its edge with a pencil.
• Make a recess of a few millimeters so that the sheet is flush with the wood.

#4. Install the lock

• Fix with the screws included in the kit, the plate and the knob lock.
• There is a plate on the plate to prevent it from moving when the knob is turned.
