Make your own floating wall shelves for your room, the planks are up and painted, new closet doors have been tidied up and I'm going to pick up some school pieces I won at a school surplus auction tomorrow to decorate the room.
A clothes closet on the other side of this wall is the reason there is this little jog of space.

Procedure:
Step 1:
First, lay out two pieces of 1×1 (which will be the main support for the shelves).
Be sure to nail directly into the studs behind the wall.

Step 2: Cut a board to line up with your two walls.
Nail directly into the top of the board so that it touches the 1×1 bracket below.

Step 3:For the bottom of the shelf, cut a board identical to the top and fasten it under the 1×1. Measure a face board that covers the space, the top and bottom boards.

Measure a face board that covers the space, the top and bottom boards.

Step 4:I filled all the nail holes with stable wood filler.
If you look closely, you can probably see where the wood filler is.

Because the wood filler was not the same color as the boards, it was also stained differently.
In retrospect, I wish I hadn't filled the nail holes and left the holes undrilled for a more rustic look.
Step 5: I used frog tape to protect the wall, which worked great on the top, but staining the bottom was a different story.
Applying the stain without dripping was really difficult. Avoid touch-up paint and use two rows of tape or wider tape when staining the underside.

Step 6: The shelves are going to provide much-needed storage for that small bedroom.
