Simple Steps to Build a Brick Walk, If you thought brick walks were only for the rich and famous, it may be time to re-evaluate your status in life. A modest brick paving project is a great way to add character to your home, without having to call in a landscaping or masonry professional.

The work is not particularly complicated, and careful preparation will ensure a work that is beautiful and long-lasting. In fact, brick walks have been known to last over a hundred years.

#1: Planning

• First, make a scale drawing of your hallway or path to help calculate material quantities. Next, decide on a brick pattern. The simplest choice is the correlation pattern we use.
• Other popular patterns are herringbone and design (see drawings). The patterns can be aligned with the direction of your walk, or at an angle.
• Keep in mind, however, that a complicated pattern or angled alignment will result in more waste.
• The bricks used for walkways, patios, and driveways are called pavers and are not the same as those used for building walls or chimneys.
• Ordinary brick is too porous and soft for paving applications, and would break and disintegrate quickly if used for walking.
• A standard paver measures 3 3/4 x 7 1/2 inches. And measures approximately 2 1/8 inches thick. Calculate the area of ​​your path and allow five bricks per square foot. For a current bond, add 10 percent for cuts and defects.
• If your walk has a curved or angled shape, or if you choose a more complicated pattern, leave extra bricks for cutting.

#2: Site Preparation

• Before starting the hike, inspect the site and check the slope of the terrain. Use a straight 2x4 and level to determine the slope (Fig. 1). Ideally, the walk should be at the same height as the ground cirundancy. In some cases, it may be necessary to adjust the height and pace of the walk. It is important that the walk has a slight slope to allow water to leave the surface. • Now place wooden stakes in the surrounding grass (Fig. 4). Keep the stakes about 12 inches from the edge of the hole, and place them about 3 feet apart along the walk on both edges. Stretch the mason's rope between the pairs of stakes throughout the walk area. The lines will serve as guides to measure the depth of the hole and the stone base. Adjust the height of the rope so that it is a uniform distance above the adjacent ground surface (Fig. 5). The height of the rope is arbitrary, but it should be high enough above the hole so that it does not interfere with your work.
• Continue excavating the hike site. Use the shovel to cut the sides of the hole vertically (Fig. 6) so that the gravel base is all the way to the edge of the hole. Check the depth of the hole by measuring to the string guides (Fig. 7). The bottom of the hole should be approximately 7 1/2 inches below the surface of the soil. Try to make a reasonably flat-bottomed hole. If you remove any large stones, simply fill the gaps with gravel.

#3: Base of the pedestrian path

• Use a wheelbarrow to carry the gravel to the excavation (Fig. 1). Spread the gravel to a minimum depth of 4 inches with a garden rake (Fig. 2). Check the height of the gravel against the guide ropes. When the gravel is at the proper height, remove the ropes to provide unobstructed access to the site. This is the time to set the grade of your hike. Adjust the footing pitch by adding more gravel where necessary. Use a length of 2x4 and its level to check the slope.
• Next, use the plate compactor to pack the gravel base (Fig. 3). Slowly move the machine over the surface several times. Proper compaction of the base will prevent the walk from settling later.
• Temporarily place a row of bricks at each end of the walk to act as guides in positioning the edge constraints (Fig. 4). This technique minimizes the amount of cutting required. If you are using the open loop pattern, it is especially important to avoid having partial bricks on the edges.
• Place the edge against the bricks and operate the landscape spikes to lock it in place (Fig. 5). Place the tips about 3 feet apart along the edge. Where necessary, cut the edges to length with a hacksaw (Fig. 6). If your path has a curved profile, simply cut the tape on the outside of the edges so it can be bent to the required shape.
• Spread a 1-inch-deep layer of sand over the gravel base (Fig. 7). Use a 2x4 to screed sand onto a smooth surface (Fig. 8). If you cut a 1 3/4-in. In each ext2x4 paddle, you can rest the notches on the edge grips as you pull the 2x4s across the sand.

#4: Finishing

• Start placing the bricks at one end of the walk (Fig. 1). For a running loop pattern, stagger the bricks down the middle of their length, leaving gaps at the end to be filled later. Once you have laid down about 2 feet of the walkway, you can kneel on the bricks to work. Be careful to place each brick so that its edges closely touch adjacent bricks. Once all the bricks are in place, use the brick cutting saw to fill in the gaps in the walk (Fig. 2). Fill the reservoir at the base of the saw with water. Water circulates to cool the blade and keep dust to a minimum.
• After all the bricks are in place, go over the walk several times with the plate compactor to place the bricks on the sand base (Fig. 3). This procedure locks the bricks in place to help prevent them from shifting when the walk is exposed to severe weather or heavy use.
• Use a broom to brush sand over the surface to fill the spaces between the bricks (Fig. 4). Repeat the walk several times to ensure a complete job. Sweep excess and lightly spray some water along the walk to remove dust. After the walk has been in service for a couple of weeks, repeat the sand application.
• Fill the excavation with topsoil and cover the exposed edge restraint tape. Tamp the soil to compact it, then plant grass to fill the grass to the edge of the walk. Grass roots will grow through the holes in the edging restriction to further lock it in place. You can also plant flowers, small shrubs or ground cover to border the walk.
