Turning Firewood into Floating Shelves, I'll show you how to turn a log of firewood into floating shelves. Everyone is making 1x6 floating shelves, so having something this unique will really make them stand out from the rest. You can use almost any wood as long as it has the dimensions you are looking for.
And it even has some hidden storage for all your precious secrets. I hope you enjoy the project!

Step 1: Supplies and Tools
Tools used:
- Band saw
- Garlopa
- Planer
- Random Orbital Sander
- Cordless drill
- 2″ Forstner Drill Bit
- 1.5″ Spade Drill Bit
- 7/16″ Drill Bit
Materials:
- Firewood (size varies)
- Invisible mounting equipment
- Oil-based wood finish
Step 2: Find a log and divide

I found this trunk from a tree that was cut down in my area. I don't have a chainsaw so I had to split it by hand. I found the biggest crack and used the ax to dig it open.
Using a chainsaw here would be optimal.
Once it was split, I cleaned up the bottom of the face and drew the lines to cut out my shelf.
Step 3: Cut the log with a sled or saw

I used a band saw to cut the logs. If you don't have one, a handsaw will do the same.
I made a quick sled out of 3/4″ MDF to mount on my band saw and put the log on it and shimmy it with nails held in place with hot glue.
I lined the line I drew earlier with the cut line and defined the top of each shelf with a cut.
Step 4: Square the logs and dimension to final size

I used my jointer to get a square edge on the shelves. You can also use a belt sander or hand plane to do the same thing here.
This gave me a 90 degree corner to take back to the band saw and cut the shelves to approximate thickness.
I brought the shelf to final thickness on the planer and jointer.
Again, you can do all of this with a saw and then clean the faces with a belt sander or hand plane. Although it would be much safer work!
With the pieces at the final thickness of 4″, I cleaned the live edge with a chisel to remove rotted wood, bark, and then sanded the face to remove the chisel marks.
Step 5: Prepare the assembly equipment

I used invisible mounting hardware recessed into the back of the shelves. It is just a mounting plate and a support rod joined together by a set screw.
I extended the kit to match the spacing of my wall studs and drilled a 2″ recessed hole with a forcing bit to bury the plate.
I drilled 7/16″ deep holes for the support rods in the shelves and it fit perfectly.
Step 6: Add hidden storage

I decided to drill some relief holes in the back to lighten the weight and I also ended up making some hidden storage holes.
Each hole is 1-1/2″ deep and the perfect size to fit a small medicine bottle or a jar of 35mm film filled with your precious microfiche.
Step 7: Apply the finish

I applied several coats of oil-based polyurethane to the shelves. Using a brush on the front live edge does a better job of getting into all the nooks and crannies.
Step 8: Mount the shelves to the wall

I mounted the shelves to the wall studs with 2-1/2″ screws. The shelves simply slide onto the rods when installed. You can also place a little adhesive on the holes for added security.
I love how they turned out and they really make a statement.
