Step 1: Warning

Before we continue, I must warn you about a few things:

• Also, when working with glue, make sure everything is dry and clean before touching the phone.

• Wooden casing needs to be very precise to work well, and this precision can only be achieved by regular testing while it is being built.

Step 2: Tools and materials

Tools :

• Calibrate
• Router: 12mm straight bit
• Sander (heavy duty belt sander, orbital finishing sander)
• Precision cutting saw
• Clamps

Materials:

• A piece of solid wood, preferably a good piece of tropical wood. (Since this is a very small item, which will hopefully last a couple of years, it's okay to use up some tropical hardwood.)
• Some fabrics, for example, old jeans...
• Wood glue
• Contact glue
• CAD drawing with dimensions of your phone

Step 3: Building the template

Precision routing cannot be done freehand, so you need something to support your movement. A template.
In general, a template is a self-created support tool that enhances the capabilities of other tools.

Some will serve you a lifetime, others you will only need once...
Typically, you will build them from some scrap materials, the quality of which corresponds to the life expectancy of the template.

The jig shown in the image is one I use regularly to route small pieces of wood. I will add more instructions in the future that are made using this template.

Step 4: Sand the piece

• The box will be assembled from 2 halves that will be joined together at the end.
• The two halves are symmetrical, although one will have an additional opening through which you can "take out" the inserted phone.
• Assemble the bamboo on the template: see image: I use a pair of wooden nails.
• Make sure they do not escape the router's vibrations.
• Adjust the guides so that a rectangular area passes off-centre: this area should measure 130mm x 62mm and 4.5mm deep. Remember that you can always make this cut wider and deeper, but never the other way around. So, you can start on the safe side, then try the phone, then adjust...
• Cut the piece downward, lengthwise to almost its final size. The last mm will be trimmed on the belt sander.
• Direct an extra opening on 1 piece only, to allow you to remove the phone with your index finger. Therefore, it should be a little larger than the width of your index finger.

Tip: Regularly clean your work area, as even small wood splinters can make your work inaccurate.

Step 5: Add the fabric and test dimensions

The most difficult thing about this project is makingThe phone slides in and out easily (without causing scratches to your screen) while preventing the phone from falling due to gravity.

Both goals can be achieved by adding a piece of fabric to the inside. In step 3 we made each half shell 4.5mm deep, giving a total of 9mm.

The iPhone is 7.6mm, so we can add 1.4mm of fabric. I used some jeans, of which four layers (2 on each side) provide exactly the right friction.

This will require a bit of experimentation: tentatively stack all the parts: under shell, cloth, phone, cloth, top shell and clamp them together with small clamps.

Then test the friction. Take your time and again be careful with the phone. Glue the fabric inside the wooden shells. I used an extra dummy piece of MDF so I could press the fabric into place while the glue dries.

After the fabric has been glued, cut 2mm at the "entrance" of the box. This can still be done after assembly and sanding, but it's easier now.

Step 6: Pasting

Avoid excess glue dripping to the inside, check the inside of the box with a flashlight after assembly.
Let the glue dry enough to avoid wet glue on your phone.

Step 7: Sanding and finishing

Sand the box to its final size:

• Start with 80 grit on the belt sander
• Finish with 400 grit by hand.
• Wood oil.

Again, avoid spilling oil inside (the fabric will be greasy forever...) and let everything dry well before inserting the phone. That's all!
