Which regions of the world have the best food? The culinary travel guide “Tasteatlas” has now answered this in a ranking. The food experts present the 100 best food regions in the world. Not surprisingly: quite a few are in Europe. Sunnytrips presents the three best and shows the top 25.
Where is the best food in the world? If you're thinking about Italy (because who doesn't like eating Italian?), you're thinking wrong. At the beginning of the year we reported on Sunnytrips that Greece had dethroned Italy when it came to culinary delights. However, things look a little different in the current ranking by “Tasteatlas” of the world’s best food regions. Greece's foodie status is also reflected here with ten out of a hundred regions, not least one in the top 3 and three in the top 5. But Italy is clearly ahead when it comes to the best food regions. A total of 15 of the country's 20 regions make it onto the list. And it is also an Italian region that leads the ranking.

3. Emilia-Romagna in Italy
These are the 25 best food regions in the world according to “Tasteatlas”
According to “Tasteatlas”, the ranking is based on 477,287 valid reviews for 15,478 foods. From these, the culinary travel guide determined the highest average values and thus created the list of the best 100 food regions in the world. But now to the winning regions.
These are the three best food regions in the world
1. Campania in Italy
According to “Tasteatlas”, the best food region in the entire world is Campania in the southwest of Italy, i.e. the region around Naples. As a reminder: the birthplace of pizza. The region received 4.44 stars.
Unsurprisingly, pizza is also a must-try here, especially the Pizza Napoletana and the Pizza Margherita. Also on the list: the tomato Pomodoro S. Marzano dell’Agro Sarnese-Nocerino, Mozzarella di Bufala Campana and the pasta sauce Sugo alla Genovese. According to “Tasteatlas”, you can eat in the iconic traditional restaurants Pizzeria Starita a Materdei (Naples), Ristorante La Pignata (Ariano Irpino), Oasis Sapori Antichi (Vallesaccarda), La Ripa (Rocca San Felice) and La Piazzetta (Valle dell’Angelo). And if you like cooking yourself, you should try the Frantoio Romano and Terranova olive oil varieties as well as the cheeses La Tenuta Bianca and Agriturismo Caseria in Campania. According to “Tasteatlas”, the Microbirrificio Artigianale Incanto beer is worth drinking.
2. Peloponnese in Greece
The second best food region in the world is Greek: the southern Peloponnese peninsula. The food there is rated almost as well as that from Campania, with the region achieving 4.42 stars.
Olive oil is the favorite product of Peloponnesian critics. Six can be found in the lists of gourmet products from the region as well as in the list of products that you definitely want to try. These are: Liokareas Olive Oil, Agro.Vi.M., Finiki Lakonias, Kalamata, Olympia and Lygourio Asklipiou. Peloponnese gourmet products also include Eriza jam, Hidden Barn Whiskey and liqueur from the Vantana Distillery. In addition, the protected honey Meli Elatis Menalou Vanilia is recommended. If you would like to dine in a traditional restaurant on site, “Tasteatlas” recommends the Taverna Vasilas Vasileios in Agionori, the Taverna Zérzoba in Markos and Notre Maison in Gialova.
3. Emilia-Romagna in Italy
The northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna is third best in the ranking, tied with Peloponnese with 4.42 stars.
The number one food to try here is the local cheese, Parmigiano Reggiano, followed by the sauce Ragù alla Bolognese. Other special features here are the balsamic vinegars Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena and Aceto Balsamico di Modena as well as the ham Prosciutto di Parma. In addition to these, special gourmet products are also mentioned here, such as the cheeses Caseificio Valsamoggia and Caseificio Gennari, the spirits from DiBaldo Spirits, the beers from Brewine Leopoldina and the olive oil Il Borgo Del Melograno.
And of course there are also some traditional restaurants to discover in this food region. These include Locanda Mariella in Fragnolo, Al Vèdel in Colorno, Locanda del Falco in Rivalta Trebbia, Osteria di Fornio in Fidenza and Trattoria Entrà in Entrà.
