Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia – Spain has numerous cities that are world-famous and attract tourists in droves. But there are many other cities, especially in the interior, that are worth seeing but receive significantly less attention. One of the true pearls in the country, with breathtaking architecture and rich in cultural treasures, is a city in the northeast of Spain: Zaragoza. Sunnytrips reveals what there is to see in the capital of Aragon.
Many places in Spain are among the most popular travel destinations in Europe. Not only Germans, but tourists from all over the world are drawn to Barcelona, Mallorca and the Canary Islands every year - sometimes in such masses that there are increasing protests from locals and governments have to take measures against overtourism. But fortunately there are also numerous worthwhile alternatives in the country that have so far been spared from mass tourism. This also includes Zaragoza, the capital of the Spanish autonomous community of Aragon.

Location of Zaragoza in Spain
The city, which has almost 700,000 inhabitants, is nowhere near as well-known as a travel destination as Barcelona or Seville and can still be described as an insider tip. The more than 2,000-year-old city on the River Ebro has a number of attractions to offer visitors.
Sights in Zaragoza
The old town of Zaragoza was restored as part of the Expo 2008 world exhibition. Since then, old squares and palaces have shone. Churches and town houses are more beautiful than ever. The city's most important landmark is the baroque church Basílica del Pilar. It is the largest baroque building in Spain and was built in honor of the Virgin Mary. Tip: Climb up to the bell tower for a beautiful view of the city.
The square in front of the basilica, the Plaza del Pilar, is also impressive. Nearby is the Cathedral de la Seo, the oldest church in the city and also a spectacular sight.
Built by Arabs in the 11th century, Alfajería Palace was expanded in the Middle Ages and now serves as the seat of the regional parliament of Aragon. There is also a museum in parts of the palace.
Another adornment of the cityscape is the stock exchange (La Lonja), which was completed in the 16th century. The market hall, which was built on the city wall more than 100 years ago, is also worth seeing: both as an architectural monument and when shopping past the stalls.
Attractions in the area
Beyond the old town, the Jusilbol district in the north is worth a visit. Centuries-old caves are still inhabited there. On a branch of the Ebro there is also a nature-protected wetland, a popular weekend destination for people from Zaragoza. The Cistercian monastery of Piedra on the banks of the Ebrou and the waterfalls of the Rio Piedra southwest of Zaragoza are among the attractions in the area.

It's in Europe! This is the best region in the world for a road trip
In the south of Spain, this coastal city is as beautiful as Barcelona - just less well-known
Best time to travel
The best time to travel to Zaragoza is autumn, when the temperatures are still pleasantly mild. For example, on October 12th, the Spanish national holiday, the festival of the “Virgen del Pila” is celebrated, a social highlight of the city. But spring is also a wonderful time to visit. It can get very hot in midsummer.
