This is an image that can be seen all too often on planes: Although the plane is still taxiing, the first passengers are already loosening their seatbelts and standing in the aisle. The Turkish Civil Aviation Authority is now taking new measures to combat this.

According to the new regulation, airlines must explicitly and repeatedly inform their passengers that leaving their seats is only permitted after the aircraft has come to a complete stop. Failure to do so could result in a report to the aviation authorities – and a fine. The Turkish broadcaster “Halk TV” mentions a sum of around 60 euros, even if the exact amount is not specified in the regulation itself.

But it's not just premature unfastening of seat belts that is punished in Turkey: Anyone who pushes forward after the seat belt signs have been switched off, even though passengers in the front rows of seats have not yet gotten out, must also expect consequences. In such cases, airlines should make it clear via loudspeaker announcement: “Do not stand up or walk down the aisle until it is your turn to exit the aircraft.”
