Xisco Muñoz and Johor's Unbeaten Record: Football's New Invincibles 2026

Xisco Muñoz, the former Watford head coach, is on the verge of leading Johor Darul Ta'zim to a world-record 109 unbeaten league matches, a feat that defies football's norms. The Spanish manager, who was dismissed by Watford just months after securing Premier League promotion, has found remarkable success in Malaysia, where his team stands one game away from surpassing the 32-year-old record held by Ivorian side Asec Mimosas.

The Unbeaten Record: A New Invincibles

Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) are the undisputed powerhouses of the Malaysian Super League, backed by the royal family and managed with precision by Xisco. Their current streak of 108 unbeaten league matches is a testament to consistency, tactical discipline, and an unyielding winning mentality. A draw or victory against Kuching on Friday would etch their name in football history.

Xisco, known for his adventurous coaching career spanning Georgia, Cyprus, and Slovakia, embraces the challenge. "It's difficult to not lose one game," he admits, highlighting the mental and physical demands of maintaining such a run. The record, he notes, is a rare achievement that even Europe's financial giants are unlikely to match.

Xisco's Journey to Malaysia

After leaving Watford in 2021, Xisco took charge of JDT last summer. His appointment was part of a broader vision by the Crown Prince of Johor, Tunku Ismail ibni Sultan Ibrahim, who transformed the club into a regional superpower. The 40,000-seater Sultan Ibrahim Stadium stands as a symbol of this ambition.

Xisco's tactical acumen and ability to motivate players have been pivotal. He has built a squad that blends local talent with international experience, creating a cohesive unit that rarely falters. The pressure is immense, but Xisco thrives on it, drawing from his own playing days at Valencia and Betis.

The Crown Prince's Vision

The Crown Prince's investment has turned JDT into the "Manchester City of Malaysia," but Xisco insists success is not merely a product of money. "It's about hard work, preparation, and respect for every opponent," he says. The club's infrastructure, youth development, and professional environment have all contributed to this historic run.

Comparison: Asec Mimosas vs. Johor Darul Ta'zim

As the table shows, JDT are on the cusp of breaking a record that has stood for over three decades. The achievement is even more remarkable given the increased competitiveness of modern football.
