This Tempting Madness Review: Gaslighting Thriller Keeps You 2026

This Tempting Madness review reveals a watchable psychological suspense that delivers a Mexican standoff of gaslighting. Directed by Jennifer E Montgomery, the film stars Simone Ashley as Mia, a woman recovering from a coma after a mysterious fall. With her husband Jake (Austin Stowell) in jail and her brother Ajay (Suraj Sharma) urging separation, Mia must untangle who is manipulating whom.

Plot and Psychological Depth

The story opens with Mia doodling ouroboroses and picking at her surgical scar—clear signs of deep mental distress. After waking from a coma, she cannot remember if Jake pushed her off an airport building or if it was an accident. Her fragmented memories and fugue states drive the narrative, creating a claustrophobic atmosphere that mirrors her inner turmoil.

As Mia visits Jake in jail, he suggests that Ajay is gaslighting her to break them up. But is Jake the manipulator, or is Mia gaslighting herself? This question fuels the film's tension, making every conversation a psychological chess match.

Performances and Direction

Simone Ashley delivers a compelling performance as a woman teetering between reality and delusion. Austin Stowell brings a chilling ambiguity to Jake, while Suraj Sharma's Ajay is both caring and suspicious. Montgomery's direction shines in the recurring visual of Mia falling in her tangerine dress, a mnemonic that echoes Vertigo's obsession with time and memory.

The film's circle motif—seen in her drawings and elsewhere—emphasizes the cycle of abuse that must be broken. However, the plot sometimes loses grip on Mia's inner state, making certain spinouts feel abrupt.

Comparison with Other Psychological Thrillers

Unlike Gone Girl's crisp plotting, This Tempting Madness is more dreamlike, sacrificing clarity for atmosphere. Yet its unique take on gaslighting—where everyone, including the protagonist, may be deceiving themselves—sets it apart.

Key Takeaways

• Strong performances from Ashley, Stowell, and Sharma
• Montgomery's direction creates a haunting visual language
• The gaslighting theme is explored from multiple angles
• Plot is heavily driven but not always scrupulously plotted
• Ideal for fans of slow-burn psychological thrillers
