Mo Gilligan: From Viral Videos to BAFTA-Winning Comedian 2026

Mo Gilligan, the BAFTA-winning comedian, rose from retail work to viral fame with his online sketches. His journey from council estate to Netflix documentary host is inspiring for aspiring entertainers.

Early Life and Comedy Roots

Born in Lambeth, south London, in 1988, Mo Gilligan grew up on a council estate near East Dulwich. His childhood was filled with outdoor play and a multigenerational community where everyone looked out for each other. His aunts and uncles were naturally funny, always teasing, which shaped his comedic instincts.

As a teenager, Gilligan realized that making people laugh was his currency. He wasn't the best at academics, but his silly personality and impressions of Eddie Murphy and Jim Carrey made him popular among friends. He honed his standup style at the back of the bus, unknowingly preparing for his future career.

Viral Breakthrough and Career Leap

In 2017, Gilligan's online sketches went viral, catching the attention of celebrities like Drake and Ian Wright. This momentum led to his debut tour, Coupla Cans, and a television career co-hosting The Big Narstie Show and presenting The Lateish Show. He quit his retail job after realizing the opportunity was too big to ignore.

His success continued with three standup specials, including In the Moment, and two BAFTA awards. His latest project, Big Chicken: A Fast Food Conspiracy, is now on Netflix, exploring the fast food industry with his signature humor.
